KLH Five efficiency

ssmith3046: My 1968 restored pair and my Fisher 500C make beautiful music together.[/QUOTE said:
I have never had the chance to listen to, let alone purchase, a 500B or 500C. It's a hole in my listening resume!

The KLH Model 5 is the most underrated vintage speaker available.

That's for sure.
Look at the prices of AR-3a. And KLH Five is at least as good as AR-3a, if not better.
Also they look much better then most speakers because of these beautiful front woodwork, very important for WAF.

As nice as the 5's look, IMO the 23's are right there with them. I sometimes prefer the 23's over the 5's, just depends what I'm listening to. I've been playing Phase Techs along with 2 subs for the last few weeks but I think I still prefer the 5's and 23's (no subs needed).
Getting back on topic I pulled my 5's out this afternoon and AB'd them between my Onkyo A-10 (85w/ch) and SX-850 (65w/ch). Gotta say they sound more "pure" at the same volume levels running on the Onkyo. The Onkyo is a beast of an amp, dual mono design. I'm betting those watts ratings were somewhat conservative. The 5's find a new gear with some nice power behind them.

I am doing the same right now! It sounds amazing.
I used to power mine with a Fisher 500c but I've been using a restored Harman Kardon A500 for a couple of years now. I bought my restored KLH Model 5's from a audio tech in Montana years ago and have never regretted it. I've owned AR-3a's, and other AR models, but I've always liked the 5's more.

Hi are you pretty happy Onkyo A-10 and KLH Five combo? I am currently in process of recapping and doping my Fives and there happens to an A-10 for sale locally that I am going to take a look at. Would you still recommend this combo and can they get fairly loud? Thanks

85wpc should drive them nicely.

Best amp I've ever heard with Five's is a McIntosh MC240. Plenty of grunt and sweetness combined. Can listen forever.
