KLH Model 12 problem

I just acquired KLh MOdel 12 speakers. They work fine except one problem. One of the crossover boxes must have a bad component. It does not power the tweeter. I know it is the box because when I switch the boxes the tweeter works and on the other one the tweeter does not work. If I knew which capacitor to replace I could give it a shot. Any help? Or if someone knows anyone that fixes boxes that might work too.

Probably time to swap out all the caps; these speakers are quite old and sadly KLH was not well known as using the better caps in their speakers; predated "audiophile" components.

You have an excellent pair of speakers, my 2nd favorite KLHs.

I am a newbie and have no clue how

I could figure it out but do you know where there may be a diagram and instructions. I am not sure what the capacitors are in that box and where to buy replacements. My guess is someone has done this before. They sound sorse than the speakers I have then paired with which are AR2ax. I just got them and thought they would be a better speaker. Maybe it is the capacitors.

I recapped mine. There is a picture of it in another thread but I can't figure out how to move it here. I don't have a schematic. I just looked at the values on the old parts. I used polypropolyne caps for the high frequency and Nichicon bi-polar lytics for the three other LF parts.

Tweeter

perhaps I can try to localize the problem. Instead of replacing all capacitors do you know which one or couple control the tweeter? I could try that one first and see if it fixes problem an dthen do rest.

I tried again. I put a picture of the original and recapped boxes. The caps handling the high frequencies are the four yellow caps behind the 7K-20K switch on the front.

Questions on Caps

I can't view the original pic in larger view as something with the priviledges but was able to see the new Caps. Looks liek I just need to put in 4 Caps (green & yellow). Can you tell me what the model of the Caps or volts are so I can purchase? My guess is it will also improve the overall sound too.

I like the way your finish came out. They were originally oiled. Looks like you put a clear coat on the top. Looks good.

Regarding the finish, I just put some Watco Medium Walnut Danish Oil on the cabinets. It put the slight shine on them but they had a shiny finish to begin with. JBLs (like my L-100s) have a really flat finish that I like.

Notice that my speakers in the basement. I got them at an estate sale but, unfortunately, they are for sale since there is no place to put them in our house. I found a pair of Model 5s on CL later that fit perfect. Same high end, slightly worse low end.

As for the caps, there are four 4uf polypropylene caps in the high frequency section, two 50uf bipolar caps and one 16uf bi-polar in the lower frequency section in each box. The bipolar caps are not exactly the same value as the originals but they were as close as I could come. Some perfectionists require polypropylene caps everywhere but the 50uf and 16uf parts would cost a fortune and are very big. I found all my parts on ebay.

Good luck,
John
