KLH MODEL 24 TT ...questions

Hello. I recently aquired a KLH model 24 receiver/TT combo for $45.00. I have questions concerning both the amp and the TT but I figured I would post the TT questions here and save the receiver questions for the Solid State forum.

So, about the turntable ...The mechanics of the TT seem to be working fine. As a matter of fact everything about the unit seems to be in great mechanical condition, as well as the KLH model 24 speakers that came with it and the sound is really nice coming from the FM tuner, however the turntable is missing the stylus. It is a Garrard TT and the cartridge that is on the unit reads V-15HB/AT2B Pickering. Can someone suggest where online to get this stylus. And if the actual stylus isn't available, which stylus do you recommend and which online company do you recommend I get the replacement stylus from? I'll probably want the 78 stylus as well.

Also just curious as to your general opinion on the TT in this system.
- Thanks

I own a KLH 24 that doesn't sound like its in as good of condition as yours, and I LOVE mine! I've actually put it up on CL before, and I bailed on selling it because I started listening to it again and then took the posting down. It's really a marvelous sounding unit!

I was in the market for a receiver and turntable as I had already picked up a pair of KLH 17's at the local flea market, but then I saw the KLH 24 combo in the local CL WITH the 24 speakers included and had to snap it up. It DOES sound great ..very warm but clear at the same time. And for a low wattage unit it really puts it out there. Should be perfect for the office it's going to be in. So do you happen to know which stylus I should get and where to get it?

If you cannot find the stylus for the v15 a stanton 500EE stylus will work, and cost less

I picked up a KLH Model 20 awhile ago and found myself in the same situation as you........it needed a Pickering stylus. I contacted Kevin at KAB and he solved the problem at a very reasonable cost. He knows his stuff when it comes to TTs and cartridges/styli.

Good luck! :D

That's what we put on my mom's KLH. It still works and sounds great although the speakers have been replaced due to the originals long ago being lost in a move. I've lubricated the turntable and changed out the stylus and that's all the maintenance its ever had - or needed.

On Garrard turntables of this series, the idler wheel often deteriorates. The tire rim gets hard and slippery, or the rubber will actually shed "powder." This is an extremely common failure. The symptoms are that it takes a little too long to come up to speed, and/or it stalls during cycling.

The other common failures are: (a) the pivot bearing for the cycling cam gums up; (b) the end-of-play trip pawl on the cycling cam gets sticky.

Terry's Rubber Rollers rebuilds idler wheels.

How do you guys set the tracking force on these?

I know how to adjust the tracking force, but I don't know exactly what it's tracking at.

Actually, the slight differences between the proprietary version of the V15 that KLH used means that the Stanton 500 styli won't work. There are good original Pickering V15 styli around that don't really cost a lot. V-M audio Enthusiasts has probably the best assortment and price. The 604-DET here is probably the best bet for that Garrard.

The setting will be determined by the stylus you're using. To set it you'll need a digital scale or one of the Shure stylus force gauges. Adjust, measure, adjust, measure until you have it where you want it.

I gotta get one of these digital scales. I actually have a Shure stylus gauge, but it only goes up to three grams.

I go t a replacement, 4604-D7C, from VoM, but it tracks from 3-7g. I'd like to put it at around 5 probably.

I may go to Home Depot today to see what they have. But I'm still going to try to figure out a DIY solution. There's got to be something I can make with a couple of pennies and a straw or something.

Go to Harbor Freight and get their small digital scale.

My AR tracking force scale is basically a plastic balance beam and a triangular bit of plastic that you use for the pivot. Set the thing up with the stylus on the spot on one side, and place known weights on the other to figure the tracking force out. You could probably do the same thing with a popsickle stick, a straw , and coins or washers of known weight. Only trick is getting the distance even on both sides, otherwise the results are off.
