KLH Model 5 blown woofer

one of my KLH Model 5s seems to have a blown woofer - it stays in the 'extended' position and rattles when being played. Other than fleabay, is there another source for OE woofers? Can this woofer be rebuilt/repaired? Thanks for any advice...

:scratch2:

Become an AK subscriber and post a want ad in the Barter Town parts listings, that's the best route. Otherwise keep on the lookout at fleabay, it's the same woofer used in the Model Twelve and Twenty-Three systems.

There's a couple of Model 23 woofers currently on ebay. It may be that the cloth surround is the issue and needs to be retreated. Lots of threads on the surround retreatment subject.

I used a light coat of flexible undercoating in a can purchased at an auto parts store. Used it on 3 pairs of KLH's I own and has worked perfectly.

Cheers!

Maybe on "the Bay" too. They are around. If you buy sight unseen or thru pics make sure the cones have the xx.x numerical values scribed on them. They made these particular woofers (same size as the model 6 - a drop in fit) also with round and square magnets (larger than the models 6's used). Might be the 23's used the round or the 5's, I have no idea but they will both work.

Ok, I bought one of the 'bay' woofers, which should return the speakers to their glory... Thanks for the info - it does look like the "6" woofer is the same, too!

Nope! Model Six uses an entirely different woofer with a smaller magnet and voice coil structure plus a lighter cone. If you bought a Model Six replacement woofer you bought the wrong one (hopefully not). There is a ton of misinformation out there, especially on flea-bay!

No, I didn't buy a "6" woofer - the one I bought is for a 5, 12 or 23... But it's good to know the 6 isn't correct. I'll file that away... Thanks!

Make sure and recap the crossovers if you haven't done so. Original KLH caps are crap and are usually dead or way out of spec. My 5's really woke up after recapping.

Nautiker,

Be wary of this type of recommendation. Do not apply anything until you try the woofer out. There is a reason there are "lots of threads" on this issue.
