KLH Model Five badges questions

I just got KLH Model Five speakers, but grills missing badges. I do not think it affects the sound, nevertheless I want to restore grills to the original state. I found badges on eBay, but they have screws on the back. I think Model Five badges should not have screws, badges probably should be flat and simply glue to the fabric. The same way as in Model Six.
I guess my questions are: do these eBay badges fit? Should I cut the screw out? How badges attach to the Model Five grills?

Those look correct. The badges on my 6's, 17's and 23's all attach with a screw just like those. I had a pair of 31's that were glued in place.

So what do they screw into? They penetrate the fabric and screwed into grill's cardboard?

Screw-on KLH badges screw through the Masonite of the grilles and into the front baffle of the speaker. I Think the Model Five had the screw-ons but the way to be sure is to look for a hole in the lower (left or right?) corner of the grille and/or the front baffle, maybe around 1.5" up from the bottom of the baffle and 2" in from the side.

Note: this assumes that your Model Fives have removable grilles. If not, then I guess you would need to look for damage to the grille cloth or feel for a bump beneath it in the appropriate area .

AFAIK, all model 5's had removable grills unlike the model 6's whose earlier models had the grill cloth wrapped around the actual baffle.

I've never seen a pair of Model Fives that had screw in badges. Every pair that I've ever owned or worked on has had glue on badges. This goes for the Twenty Three as well, although there may have been some very early versions of either speaker that had the screw type. My owners manual for the Twenty Three mentions the fact that the badges were glued on. I've seen the screw on type used in early Model Seventeen speakers, and you couldn't get the grills off unless you unscrewed the badge because it went right through the grill masonite and into the baffle board of the cabinet. Personally, I would just break the screw off and use some spray adhesive to hold them in place.

They have removable grills and there is no hole in the corners. I think original badges were glued to the fabric (not screwed).

Therefore to utilize eBay badges I should cut off the screws. Or wait until non-screw type of badges appear.

That's interesting in that my 6's, 17's and 23's all have screw-on badges. My 6's are very early with non-removable grills, plywood cabs and flush-mount crossover plate. My 20's, of course, have no badges as I believe was the norm with them.

Yeah, it's a mixed bag. I've had Seventeens and Sixes with screw-ons and Thirties, Twenty-Twos and Twenty-Fours with glue-ons. It might have something to do with cost cutting under Singer but I don't really know.

I think that clinches it. The glue-ons show up on the auction site periodically.

Too bad 'cuz the screw-ons were much higher quality.

My KLH-5's have screw-on badges...see attached pics. I used to have another pair that had glue-on badges. The badge dimensions were the same, being the larger size. The screw-on type is of higher quality, harder to find, and fetches a higher re-sale price, so I wouldn't advise breaking off any screws.

There is a fellow over at the Classic Speaker Pages who is planning on having glue-on type KLH badges reproduced. The last attached photo is of two of his prototypes next to an original (upper right). The glue-on type also show up fairly often on Ebay.

Nice reproductions.
Thank you Roy for your advice, I'll wait for glue-on badges, repro or original, don't want create holes in grills.
 
I had a original pair with screw in badges with trashed grills. I finally found a clean cheap pair of grills that were missing the logos. I simply popped off the screws and hot glued them to the replacement grills.
