I agree completely.

But, here's the rub, and i dunno if it was shilling, or just a BS bidder since after indicating a completed sale, they're now re-listed at the same price.

I honestly don't think anybody is paying this kind of money for 5's, i need to get back in business if they are.

Even so, 799 is a long way from 450. And around my neck of the woods, Fives are very, very uncommon. Heck, my Fives are worth more than that to me.

Now, you got it.

My main point is that when you have completed sales appearing in green for that kind of money, it sets a precedent for the marginally informed seller and thus you see unrealistically steep asking prices as a result..

They didn't last long, which makes it a bit surprising that the pair in your OP hasn't sold given their pretty excellent condition.

Restoring a set of 5’s is no small matter. Cross-overs are complex plus the box is a sealed design and hence surrounds require careful treatment. I would not sell my restored 5’s anywhere near these numbers - maybe north of $1K. I think $400-$500 for an original set is about right.

I was ecstatic to buy a pair of original 5s for 350.00 a couple of weeks ago. I'm in the Atlanta area and can say that they rarely come up for sale. These have the "newer" pcb crossovers (as opposed to the earlier aluminum plate point to point) and were a bit of a handful to rebuild, but very much worth it.

At one point I was considering a six hour drive to Nashville to buy a similar pair for 425.00. No question that they are a sought after speaker and the market seems to reflect this.

I paid close to that considering I had to pay for shipping. They are really hard to find in Kentuck.

I don’t find it to be an unreasonable price considering what AR3a’s are going for. The 3a’s aren’t as bright, and the 5’s don’t go as low as the 3a’s. Kind of a wash to me as long as I’m listening in the sweet spot.

There’s not enough difference in sound quality for me to justify the much steeper price of the AR. The only AR I have left is the AR98LS and I prefer the KLH Model 5’s to them.
