KLH Model One(s) and Janszen 1-30(s)

FWIW, I had modified Small Advents with D130's in my college apartment in 1974, which probably sounded somewhat similar.
 
15" Small Advent? Pretty good!

I don't know what the upper end is with the Ones. It's sorta like driving a
new Lexus. It will go that fast- I'm just not sure I want to. I may have already
turned them up as loud as I ever will :-)
 
Not sure what you mean by 15". They were the original Smaller Advent. The Advent/D130's played much louder than my Quads.. It seems the KLH 1 was just "pre-packaged" version of the extremely popular and superb sounding AR1W/D130 combo. Sometimes two (2) 1W's were paired with one D130 for a killer mono system.

Gotcha. I couldn't find any D130 except a JBL woofer. I thought the speaker in your picture
was just called a "1-30".
 
Got around to new grilles yesterday- Velcro pads for securing new 1/4"
wood cutouts. The old ones are almost salvageable, but I'm just going
to put them away for the time being, rather than trying to fix them.

Another pair just sold, with Janszens, for $800. They look original, which means my grill
cloth might not be. The tops definitely weren't. These are serial #27 and 43. They have
the cheap terry cloth treatment.

I bet they sound nice indeed. They should- they cost the equivalent of ~$4500 (each)
in 2016 dollars. Yes, price doesn't guarantee performance, but it's a great starting
point. It just so happens the KLHs are, in my wife's view, "stadium" speakers.
"Thunderous" comes to mind, effortlessly so, and surprisingly tight, deep bass.
 
LOL. Just brought these in the same room with the AR3a. They might be the one speaker
system less efficient than the ARs. I'm going to need more time to compare them.

Later: A little more complicated than that. The One has more punch and might even go lower.
So, down low, (by ear) it's more efficient. But up high I'm using some old Stromberg mids and
tweets, which are more directional and put less sound in the room.

RxDx, whatever happened with these. I know that I'm late to the show, but it's new to me.
 
They are still lurking downstairs with the rest of my test flock. I just
don't have room in my office, where I spend most of my time.

The Ones are finished, meaning the boxes were stripped, oiled, etc.
There was nothing electrical or mechanical that needed attention.
The Janszens sit on the shelf, quietly waiting their turn.

Thank for the update. I've been scouring different forums as I have a set of 17s for which I am awaiting parts. Threads like this get me anxious to see and hear the outcome of this pending restoration.

Thanks for providing the link to this thread. I just read it from beginning to end. Beautiful speakers and a wonderful project. Would love to hear a pair some day. You did a great job on them. Thanks for documenting the project. What a low serial number, wow, truly historical.

When I rebuilt my fives and sixes, I thought they were rustic. Handmade one by one. And the materials used, like the playdough looking cabinet sealants and the cloth surrounds that required resealing, even the wire nuts were unusual, and I had electrical tape on some of those.

Loved working on them.

Hey, sorry for bumping such an old thread, but it’s one of the very few concerning the KLH Model 1.
The mids and the tweezers for Model 5s are available. But what if you already have a complete pair oh KLH 5s? Could you hook up the Ones just like a pair of subwoofers? That’s the way it looks on page 2 of the instructions. Realizing they mean they were meaning the insert, but could you do the same thing with an entire speaker? Could be very cool!
