KLH model six rule!

Another fan here too. Mine are the original epoxied 6's. Wasn't easy, but new caps are in place along with new grilles. They sound great.

I have an 80 series Pioneer reciever too. I think it matches very well with the 6's.

Can you give us some idea of what the values of the caps were you replaced? I have a pair and would like to recap mine.

Did you replace anything else in the crossovers?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Jeff

Per speaker -
1 ea. 8uF
2 ea. 2uF

"the "double" 2x2uF(MDF) cap which is attached to + speaker terminal and two of the switch terminals. This can be replaced with two 2uF caps in "piggy-back" fashion. Two of the leads should be wired together to the + speaker terminal and the two "loose" leads should be wired to the switch as per original. Hope that makes sense. Also, there is a single 8uF (although I've heard reports of two 4uF caps wired in parallel) in-line with + tweeter lead. This should be replaced as well. While the purists may disagree, I like to replace the stock electolytics caps with good quality polypropylene caps (like Solens, for example) in this particular speaker (or any, really, using this tweeter)." - Mark Anderson

Another recap option, that kinda duplicates the 1st generation 'oil cap' crossover, is using vintage power supply oil caps . . . I've used them with great succes in my crossover upgrades:

You can find these pretty cheap (under $5 / each) on Flea-Bay, flea markets, and radio swap meets. very smooth 'sonically speaking' :thmbsp:

Thanks Markus and Urizen. I'll order Solens from partsexpress. I'm assuming that the Solen 8.2uf is an appropriate replacement for the 8uf cap?

I'll wait to go down the oil filled cap at a later date. No wonder your speakers always sound so good Markus:yes:

Jeff,

This is personal preference, but I have found the Solens overly bright/harsh sounding, to my ears. I've had fine results using Dayton 1% and Jantzen Cross Caps. I like the Dayton 1%'s tight tolerance.

To acheive 8uF, simply wire two 4uF caps in parallel.

Don't forget to re-dope those woofer surrounds!

Good luck!

Ken

Is that little receiver below the Mac a Fisher 160t? Just curious, I have one of those little things and love it, especially the 'programmable' tuner. Thinking of bringing it to my office.

Yep  Have not tried it as receiver. Using it as tuner. Wife likes the push button channel presets.

Just got this from lotusstp. It is a cool piece.

It actually sounded quite nice as a receiver. Certainly felt like it had more wattage than it actually did. I was very impressed with it. It looks cool as well.

I have a pair of sixes in my basement, they are on the floor with a pair of AR4x's sitting on top of them. I'm using my Kenwood KR6600 receiver to power them. Boy, you are sure right. Henry Kloss, did an amazing job with them.

I STILL have to do this on my *main* pair of 6's . . . can't wait to hear them actually get BETTER :music:

I used the Aleene's fabric glue suggestion. CSP's now suggest Permatex Gasket Sealant as closest to original - at least for AR's. Has anyone here tried the Gasket Sealant? I have an old can in garage. Would porbably spring for new to use on surrounds though. One in Garage has gone through freezing/thawing for many years :D

I got a pair of KLH model six a couple of weeks ago. I bought them because I saw them listed on CL locally and they were dirt cheap. I had a bunch of equipment and they were the missing link to a seconds system with a Scott 299. They sounded really great but the tweeter started to distort in one of the speakers. I just rebuilt the networks with Sonicaps and added some new binding posts. These speakers are wonderful. People need to snatch them while the are still cheap. The only issue with them is that they are very thirsty for power, but anything is next to my LaScalas.
