KLH Model Six woofer replacement

Hello - I have a KLH Model Six woofer that has some voice coil rubbing which is audible at lower volumes. I tried inverting the woofer 180deg to see if that would help, but it doesn't.

I'm looking to replace the woofer and am wondering which other KLH speakers (or other brands) used the exact same 10" woofer? Are there other places besides eBay where I might look for a replacement? I am seeing 10" KLH woofers on eBay for other models, but I am not sure if they are the same spec as the Model Six. Thanks in advance for the help. - Matt

There are model six woofers offered on Ebay on a regular basis. Other 10 inch KLH woofers seen in models 17, 20 are not the same (smaller magnet, etc.). If your six's are pre 1964, they're the sealed enclosure type and one can not simply unscrew the woofer from the front. In other words, you'll have to pry the baffle board out... a real challenge and a mess.

Chances are yours is the later type and there should be no trouble finding a replacement woofer, just ask if they're model six woofers, not just KLH 10 inch from model 17, 20.

The model six woofer is unique to only that model. The model 5 & 23 will fit, but they will not sound good.

There are woofers listed on fleabay all the time. Also if you become a subscriber, you will have access to Barter Town, where you can place a WTB post for the woofer. I would not replace it with a modern woofer.

Thanks HSAH - Yes, mine are the later, user-friendly types. I noticed that the Model 17 woofer on eBay had a different mounting screw configuration, so I'm not surprised to hear they are different altogether. I'll just keep looking for a Model Six.
 
First of all, on the units where the woofer is epoxyed in, the grille cloth is not on a removable grille board, the grille cloth is wrapped around the baffle and the baffle is glued into the cabinet. so if you can't pry the grill off, you have the one with the epoxyed in woofer. You have to cut the grille cloth off to get to the woofer. Once you do that, a speaker rebuilder should be able to rebuild the woofer with it installed in the cabinet. There may be debris in the gab between the pole piece and the voice coil. If so, a speaker tech can get it out. If the VC is warped they may be able to replace it. You can't remove the woofer without destroying the cabinet and woofer. You would have to heat the woofer up with a blow torch to soften the epoxy.
