KLH Seventeen tweeter cover removal and repair

Hi, I'd like to have a crack at repairing two broken KLH-17 tweeters.

This is for getting a donor pair with water damaged cabs up and running for garage use.
Therefore, I would like to take a crack at fixing them rather than spending more.

There was a discussion here, but I can't find it via search- spent an hour looking. I believe it was embedded in one of the restoration threads. It might have been from Glenn with one or two others chiming in that did a similar repair.

My question is 1) tips on getting the metal cover off without tearing the cone. 2) What to look for as it's likely the speaker was fried because of failing cap.

Any pointers appreciated, thanks.

Hot air- hair dryer, whatever- is one option for softening the glue enough to pull
the metal cover. You can only fix visible problems, broken wires and such. If the
voice coil has been fried, not much you can do.

You need to determine status of tweeter with MM. If its open, not much you can do. The only reason to remove the grill cover would be to check/repair the small tinsel wire. Check with MM first. As for getting the cover off, I used hair dryer to loosen the brown adhesive and gently pry cover loose with small blade. Good luck.

Thanks guys, so MM -> check if open. Does that mean continuity test? Or ohms?
ohm reading on the meter.
Those super thin wires can be tricky. I attempted to repair one, and the only way I would get a meter reading was to physically hold down the wire on the surrounding ring the wire is glued to. If I let go, no reading. I tried gluing it back down without success. Others have been able to repair a clearly broken wire to bring them back to life, so worth a try.

Thanks, from the donor pair of speakers at first test both tweets worked when connected to my garage system before opening the cabs up. On opening them up and pulling the tweeters one was marked N.G. This one reads 3.7 ohm. From my original pair, the one not working shows no reading. I guess it wouldn't hurt to get the cover off and look around.

It's not a slam dunk, but I was able to repair a broken wire from a Model Six tweeter. The wire is really skinny, so easy to burn, just be careful. I was probably lucky because of my inexperience, but nothing to lose here!
