KLH Tweeters - Model Twenty-Eight

I have two dead tweeters in my KLH Model Twenty-Eight speaker (tested open with my multimeter - third tweeter tested at 4 ohms). Also hooked them up to a receiver with uber-low volume - no sound.

- am I missing anything?
- are these repairable and by who?
- what's the best way to determine an equivalent replacement from another model KLH? I know some of the tweeters looked the same but sounded different.

Looking at the woofers from your other thread they are also used in the 17's. This is an assumption, but most likely the tweets are also used in the 17's. There is a slight difference in the tweets from the 5's, 6's, 23's to the 17's although they do fit. The difference is in the frequency response. To be safe I'd go with some tweets out of 17's.

Thanks - that's what I was hoping. I read of the differences between the 5/6/23's and the 17's. The Model 28 also uses in part the same cap in the crossover as the 17's - that 2 + 2uf value (dual cap).

Is there any way to be able to compare the sound of the working tweeters out of the model 28 with those from the 17s? I actually have a spare pair of 17 tweeters by luck.

I'd take a tweeter from the 28 and put it side by side with your spare's and eye ball it. Or if you're real ambitious swap a working one over from your 28 to a 17 and see what you think.

Congratulations on a great find. I can't even imagine what the 28's will sound like in restored condition. I'm currently running Phase Techs with 2 subs. While this is more of a modern set up, I think I still prefer my 5's and 23's. I think you will be hard pressed to find anything much better once your restoration is complete. I'll be watching your restoration thread with great interest. :D

Thank You! I think what I'll do is put my working tweeter from the 28 into the cabinet of one of the 17s and run it with the other 17 tweeter - I can adjust the balance back and forth and compare directly for sound (I have an unrestored pair of 17s in my shop).

I appreciate your input on this. Thanks goodness all the tweeters in the other speaker are working - I'm only down two.

Are these repairable?

Also notice you have a set of Norman's too :-)

I think I have seen some threads on KLH tweeter repairs. GD70 I think had one. Pretty delicate repair.

My Normans are definitely keepers. They do duty in the living room cause of the nice oak cabs. Sonically nearly identical to the KLH 23's. The 23's are slightly better in LF range.

I look forward to your report on the tweeter swap.

Yes, I understand the tweeter repair can be tricky.

I love my Normans - cannot ever imagine departing with them.

Will report back on tweeter swap and comparison. That is step #34 right now. :D

Thank you! I just read the thread - a ton of information. I need to read it a couple more times. So of the six tweeters in the Model 28, 5 of 6 have the black screen glue. One has the beige and the thinner top plate. So I can make the assumption that tweeter is not original.

Not necessarily. Some have black, some have the mustard color glue. Probably what was in the parts bin is what was used the day they were assembled.
I've seen pics on six's, seventeens, with both color glues as well as painted screen flat black. There was an extensive discussion in my first model six thread (KLH model six any good?), comparing the differences in the tweeters and one was the magnet heights and flanges helped to differentiate which tweeters were for which speakers.

Btw, I was unable to repair my tweeters. The thin VC wires were broken and I was able to re solder them, they still didn't work. Others have had success repairing those wires.

We all help each other here. I would not worry about the color of the front or the glue color so much, just the thickness of the magnet plates. The oddball you have with one thinner top plate is a 5, 12, 23 tweeter. It is actually the better tweeter. I hope that helps.

Thanks Glenn - spent most of the night reading thru the threads. I too have tweeters that have the same thickness backing plate but different color glue for the screens. The thread cleared-up a lot. I opened up one tweeter and the VC wire is broken off below the cone. I'll look at the other tomorrow.
 
I try to keep a few extra tweeters handy as they blow pretty easily. I just had to replace one in my older model six's.
