Klipsch Cornwall Advice

Try hooking up your Klipsch to a vacuum tube amp. The combination of horns and tubes is amazing.

You can always retire your Pioneer speakers to the garage.
 
Watch out for the Klipsch KP series too, they were the professional line, but generally referred to as Pro versions of the home ones. 201's were Heresies, 301's were Cornwalls. My 94 ( I'm pretty sure) KP-301's put every other speaker I've ever heard to shame, by a good margin. There is no mistaking the sound. I will never get over how natural horns and guitars sound from these horns, there's something different that it seems (to me) that conventional tweeters can't do, the Klipschs seem to disappear, and all the other ones make themselves known. Sometimes I could care less, like at work, I just want to have good sound, but when I get to sit in the sweet spot, I want my Klipschs. Good buy IMO for $450, and no gas to boot! Only took 4+ hours to get that funky paint off these CBRs. :saywhat:

Will be doing a little body work next then shop for some veneer......

Got the bodywork done, and the face is painted also. Veneer came in so next is putting the new skin on !

Those look GREAT! Nice work.

I'd just oil those puppies up and GO!

Don't put off re-capping 'em. BIG difference in sound when you bring them back to spec.
 
I have to say that I'm quite envious, thats a helluva deal on a pair of speakers you'll enjoy for many years.David
 
I actually prefer Bass Ale out of glass bottles. Those Draught Cans impart a flavor (I think).

Oh, speakers! The little desk discs isolate the glass quite well.
 
Ive read a few places where folks didnt have good luck using an edge trimmer to cut end-grain. This lil rascal worked perfect on birch.

Just saw this thread for the first time...great buy, OldSkool. Looks like you have some excellent woodworking skills to boot!

Our dad bought a new pair of C-BRs back in '79 that he later stained dark walnut. Today my brother's using 'em in his audio/HT system...they still sound fan-friggin'-tastic (especially with new caps from Bob Crites of the Klipsch Forums that brightened up the original tweeters), but the birch veneer is dry and even cracking in places. Wonder if the 25 year old stain can be stripped off and the original veneer refinished, or if it's best to apply new veneer. You seem to have stripped that old paint clean off...did it damage the veneer some? I'm so afraid that walnut Minwax stain my dad used really soaked into the veneer that no amount of stripping will remove it all without thinning the veneer to tissue paper! I'm no woodworker so I'm completely clueless.

Good work thus far...best of luck with the refinish!

Yes, I used paint stripper to get rid of that nasty brushed-on oil base paint that was on there. It didnt hurt the wood at all. Only problem I had was the paint itself 'stained' the wood and was actually soaked into the pores even. So no amount of sanding would make it look right. Plus I had lots of crushed corners and other dings, so I wanted to get the edges sharp again and do the body work too. I guess the decision to reveneer will be answered after you strip things down and see how it looks. I will say this, that Rockler PSA stuff is very easy to use, not as intimidating as it seems at first. The main this is to just take your time and not get in a hurry.

I put the drivers back in last night and hooked em to my SX-1250,, I hafta tell you - these things are the real deal. Incredible sound.
