Klipsch Doesn't Suck!

I have the tags -- I managed to peel them off with little damage. I will re-install them. The veneer is Sapele -- also known as African Mahogany. The cabs were really trashed -- rounded corners, large pieces of wood missing. I thought the best way to refurb them was to apply a veneer.

Synergy is finding gear with complimentary faults.

I used older Heresys with tubes, convention SS and chip amps. They sounded irritating with all of them. Cornwalls sounded good though. My Klipsch bluetooth speaker sounds good, way better than an old Heresy. Current Heresys sounded good when given a cursory listen recently.
 
Welcome, Mitch. You have stepped on a slippery slope. The Heresy can be considered a "gateway" speaker. The first time I heard a Heresy, I did not feel like I had to own a pair. The first time I heard a Cornwall, I HAD to have a pair. They are my main speakers.

Well I found a pair of 1980 Heresys in excellent shape electronically (the cabs could use some work).
And...I love them!

I drive Cornwall IIIs with a big Marantz receiver in front and Heresy IVs with a large Marantz amp in back. They sound marvelous together.

I started off with a pair of Klipsch Tangent T10s (still have them), then a pair of T100s (made a new friend when selling them), then a pair of 79 Heresy 1s(wasn't really impressed and they moved on), and for the last 4 or 5 years, 81 Cornwall 1s. I really like the Cornwall 1s stock, driven by a McIntosh MC2205.

Interestingly, I will be doing an AB comparison of the Cornwalls driven by MC-2205 and Kef 107s driven by a Bose 1801 in the near future. The winner stays in the living room, and the loser gets relegated to the critical listening room.

Great find! I went thru a passage of transformation when I got my first Klipsch Heresy speakers. The sound of horn speakers took me on a quest that has lasted thirty years. I have owned, bought and sold most every Heritage speaker in the Klipsch line. I finally got a pair of Cornwalls and they were the bomb! Until I stumbled onto my Altec Valencias at a garage sale - got the first one for $5! Well, after that it was all Altec. They blew the Cornwalls out of my living room!

That said, if you have not owned them, you just gotta try horn speakers, (I think any of the high quality horns on the market) they will open a new vista on sound quality in the home stereo experience.
 
So you thought they sucked UNTIL you heard them? ..Curious to know why you would have such a hard opinion about a speaker/brand you had not yet heard??

In any case, glad you like them..

great job, I picked up a set of RF-7 MK1's last night in mint condition packed in the original boxes but they are missing the feet. cant wait to fire them up. currently driving some RF-3's with my NAD C375BEE and they definitely do not suck.

Was wondering how the bass is after the stuffed cabinets ?
 
Recently inherited a pair of Klipsch KG-4 speakers. Looked like they'd been heavily par-tayed throughout the years! Sounded impressive in stock form, with decent bass from two 8" K8K 8937 woofers combined with 15" KD-12 P15 2891 passive radiator. But mod bug bit, so as to finesse lower wattage amplification. Replaced stock x-over net with Dayton 6.8 uF polyprop caps to K74K 8936 tweeters to maintain smooth bass/midrange to treble tonal transition. Woofs were rewired in series with 16 gauge. Was gonna replace tweet wiring with 16 gauge also, but speaker taps are too sensitive to soldering iron heat. Was fortunate to re-solder frail wiring, so stock tweet connector wiring remains. According to loose cabinet inspection tag, C.M. verified cabs left Cabinet Dept. 9-12-89; B.G. & R.H. verified they sent cabs from Trim Dept. to P.K. in Sanding Dept. to A.F. in Finish Dept. on 9-13-89; T.D. verified completion date 9-14-89. Amp connection tabs are still badged 1984 though, @ 6 ohms.
