Klipsch Forte vs. KG4

I have a chance to pick up either a pair of Fortes or KG4's and I get the impression from most Klipsch afficianados that it's a no-brainer-get the Fortes. The only thing that has me concerned is that the Forte owner says he replaced a woofer and in the pic he sent it doesn't quite look like an exact duplicate of the original. Also, one of the passive radiators has a brown dust cap and the other black but he says they're both definitely Klipsch's and have the same part number on them.
Meanwhile the KG4's are all original and look to be in excellent condition. Given this info, are the Fortes still the ones to get? There's only 25 quid difference in price between the two, by the way. Thanks a lot!

Buy the Forte. If you are really concerned and it is going to bug you forever wait and buy a set of Forte ll. Best regards Moray James.
 
These were actually referred to as Forte 00's by the seller. I'm assuming here that Forte II's are the "new, improved" version? Thanks Moray James.
 
Heard back from the seller of the Fortes, he said it's an Avid 105 woofer that is "compatible". He said that they sound the same. He also said that both passive radiators are the same, one just has a different colored dust cap? I'm going to go check them out this afternoon, anything I should look/listen for in particular? Thanks!
 
the one dust cover could have brown'd or plum'd from sunlight or contact with a cleaner...Forte' OO is possibly Oak Oiled (the finish is usually listed as such on the label on back many Klipsch speakers)...Forte's are well loved, Forte' IIs have a Tractrix mid...Forte' were almost double the price of the kg4s when new...both will sound nice but if you can listen to them first that will be the best way to decide...

Hey BillL the Forte and the Forte ll both have exponential tweeter lenses with k7x motors (essentially a K79). I run K79's in my Forte and Forte ll. the mid horn in a Forte is the K701 which is the resin version of the cast K700 (same as rge Heresy and Cornwall). The Forte ll has the resin Tractrix mid horn which I think is the K603 (anyone correct me if I have the number wrong).
I am with Bill go with your ears if in doubt buy the Forte even if you want or have to change the woofer. Best regards Moray James.
 
Thanks guys, appreciate the info. I'm going to check out the Fortes this afternoon. I hear a lot about the Crites crossover rebuilds and tweeter diaphrams, have most of you Forte lovers done these mods to your speakers? If you have, then it must be worth it. Are these mods expensive? Thanks again!
 
Just got back from checking out the Fortes-they sounded really good. Unfortunately the cabinets were rough and even though the seller dropped to $200 I couldn't make them look good again myself as the one corner was crushed and there were some serious gouges in the one so that side would have to be re-veneered so I reluctantly passed on them. Maybe if they'd have been Forte II's I'd have considered it and paid someone to fix the cabinets...
The good news is I think I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a pair in nice enough condition to put in my living room and then go Crites on them!!! ;) Maybe I can even do a trade with someone for the ADS L-880's down the road. Thanks for all the input.
 
You can sometimes find Cornwalls for the same money as Forte II's. Better sounding speaker IMHO:yes: and I have had both at the same time, in the same room.
 
Thanks Jenkster but aren't they considerably bigger? I'm about maxing out with the Forte II's for my space.
 
Have Forte II's and Cornwalls and yes they are considerably bigger. Hang tight for either in your area. They always pop up. Love them both.
 
I stand corrected on the tractrix tweeter...you could also look for Quartets if size is a consideration...they are very nearly Forte' IIs in a slightly smaller package...they are bigger than kg4s though...and the sound improvement (I prefer the 3 way speaker design of the Quartet/Forte'/Forte' II/Chorus/Chorus II over the KG 2 way although I own kg4s and KG 5.5s and have also owned kg2s and KG 4.5s too)
