Klipsch KG4 restoration

Bought a pair of Klipsch KG4's to use with my tube amp (I have an awesome set of Polks for my Yamaha SS power amp but they don;t match the tube amp...long story)

So I got a good deal on a mechanically sound pair but cosmetically need work. (see pics)

So first, I have ordered Bob Crites Titanium Tweeter diaphragms (okay thats not cosmetic).

For the dmpled dust caps, I will try the vacuum cleaner trick ..for the cabs, I am thinking of refacing with some 1/16" beautiful wood I have and staining.

Finally, will redo the grill clothes. Speakers, $150, Grill Cloth $20, Tweeters $60, wood about $18 total cost $248

I probably could have bought a set for $248 ...maybe...But its a great project for me and the pair that did not need cosmetics would still benefits from the Bob Crites mod...so...I would still spend the $60...

How the HELL do peole press in dust caps ? I have never crushed a dust cap in 52+ years of my life ! Kids ? Bad friends ? Curiosity ? Sheesh :scratch2:

I always enjoyed this particilar model with a Tube amp! As an ex-furniture finisher you have a challenge on the veneer but it can be done!

I had two ideas.

1) I read about doing reveneer (ouch) and it would be new to me

2) I have some beautiful wood panels about 1/16" thick. I was thinking of cutting 3 pieces each (sides and top) gluing on and I can but them very close...only issue is the seam where they will meet. When I stain, I know that exposed edge will show darker like a line

I may have a pair of original KG4 brn/blk speaker grills in my attic if you or anyone else is interested. I had two pair of the KG4s, but the grills didn't match. I bought new black grills and put the brn/blk one away. It's been a few years (maybe 15 to 20) but they should still be good as new. I paid $40/pr, but would part with them for $30+shipping from 62423. If you're interested I'll see if I can find them.

Are your corners starting to seperate? My KG4's in a previous life were over-watered plant holders. Somehow the veneer isn't too horrible but the top piece is slightly warped and its pulled apart at the top corners on both speakers. Pretty sure this is the mysterious rattle that I cannot find in my room that I've recently become fixated on. I haven't messed with it, but I guess I'll have to re-glue the seams or something.

You do realize the one on the left has the base mounted to the top of the cab and is upside down, right?

Actually I didn't notice at all...ugggg...Hopefully that is NOT an issue to turn it right side up...but man...talk about missing the obvious...I just thought he had one whole speaker upsiode down till you called it to my attention..then saw the whole damn thing is mounted wrong..Sigh.

Should just have to unscrew it and remount it on the bottom. Maybe the veneer is in better shape on that side. (other than the new screw holes)

Found the issue

The base was screwed on the wrong side...note the damaged top picture has screw holes..thats where the base ShOULD BE ...whew.

Okay, we have determined, the base is screwed on the top..thats cool, right ? Just switch ..so if that is the case ...and I would be fine, then why are the BACKS both in the same direction...SOME PART of this speaker (front or back ) need to be flipped

Well I can tell you on mine the horn is on top in the front and wire connections on the bottom in the back . Perhaps the rear baffle was removed and flipped when the stand was moved top to bottom?

Thats what I am thinking...and hoping its easy to put it back...sheesh

Yeah, someone took that one apart big time. They must have removed either the back or the front baffle, put it back on upside down and moved the base to the opposite end for some reason??

Gonna have to take out the PR and see what's going on in there.

I have the same water damage problem with a pair of mine. Someone had an aquarium on top of it, rest of the speaker works great, would just like to make it look pretty. Will be very interested in seeing what you do to fix the cabinet.
