Klipsch newbie advice - comparison

Hi everyone,

I've been reading left/right/center about Klipsch speakers and only recently had the chance to buy a pair.

Considering my budget a pair of Tangent 10s were the best way for me to 'audition' the Klipsch sound...I am a convert, but need a bit more convincing.

I'm running a SS Pioneer SA-9100 and have been using a pair of Paradigm 7SE and Pioneer HPM-40.

My preference heavily leans toward the Paradigms - I find their soundstage a lot wider and the dynamics better than the Pioneers. Comparing the Paradigms to the Klipsch, I was impressed by the all-round fullness they lacked when put up against a tiny bookshelf pair like the Tangent 10s.

Problem is that the Tangents are clearly too small for what I'm 'needing' as the Paradigms can handle a lot higher levels and bass. Also, is it just me or does the midrange fall flat in comparison to the Paradigms? (both 2-ways)

I don't have more than $200-300 to spend on speakers...and I know budget is a word not affiliated with Klipsch.However, is there any Klipsch speaker that you'd recommend - based on my 'aural preference' - as an upgrade from the Tangents?

There's a local pair of KG 2's going for $200. Are they a step up?

What does the 'passive radiator' actually do? Would its presence alongside the similarly-sized woofer (8") in the Tangents make a better choice for me?

Any advice is appreciated!

I don't know about the comparison, but $200 is pricey for KG2s. My son bought a Denon receiver, Denon CD changer, and a pair of KG2s that he gave to me for $110. I paid $100 for my KG4s.

Unfortunately, my "new" KG2s are 4 hours away, so I haven't heard them yet.

I would pass on the KG2 for $200.00. I have seen them for a bit less but I like a 3 way with horn mids. $300.00 or so gets you a used pair of Heresy for a starter Klipsch. Add a sub and you might be really suprised.
 
I found most of the kg line to be lacking in the midrange, enough to have made me find different speakers. Look for klipsch quartets they are a 3-way I believe from the heritage series, they did not dissapoint. You could also look for Heresy's but you aren't going to get the bass the quartets have. I usually see both selling for around the same price. I got mine for $300.
 
I'm not sure what Klipsch go for in Canada having always read they go for more than here in the States...kg2s are fine but I would wait for something higher in the Klipsch line if you can...the Quartets are great speakers but are about three times the size of the little bookshelf kg2s...on a budget...kg4s are a huge jump up from the kg2s...

Do not discount the Reference series....they are flying below the radar. Any Reference bookshelf or tower sounds great. We listen to a pair of RF-10s here at work...outstanding speakers. I would not leave dismiss any Synergy series either.
They get no respect but for the prices you can find them for they are a deal.
Check CL or the thrifts.
 
I've seen several nice pairs of KG2's lately on CL and they are going for between 50-125 dollars. I would hold out if you are willing to spend 200. I paid 80 for my KG4s and I just picked up a pair of KG4.2s and KG1s all 4 for 175. Most KGs are going for big money around here right now but if you wait long enough you will find someone who is selling for less than half their average selling price. I check the electronics section of CL everyday several times a day.

Just don't end up paying huge money for some of the lower end models, there has been a rash of early 2000s Synergy line around here, so SF-1s and SF-2s, where people are asking between 300-500, or 800-1000 for a pair of F-2s or F-3s. They are good speakers too, but not better than the older KG line that are usually cheaper.
 
id skip the KG2s for $200. If you hold out long enough, you will find good deals, depending on where you live.

I recently got a pair of KG 3.5s for $150 and Quartets for $250, both great prices.
