I have the new RF-7 II's but a friend of mine has these so we have been comparing the two setups. For the money I think they sounds really good. Not in the 7's realm of sound quality, but these are better than other speakers in the same prices range from what I've heard. I don't think you can go wrong with them if the 7's are out of reach.
 
The Reference Series is very popular with the home theater folks and the RF-82 II is a good one for that task. I think for two channel music listening you may get more for your money at that price point with a good used pair of Chorus II's, Cornwalls or KLF 20/30's. The current sale that is going on though definitely makes the Reference Series a better value. Give them a listen if you can. I love buying new speakers but I can seldom afford what I want....like a cherry pair of RF-7ii's.

I've got a pair of the first generation RF-82s and they sound pretty good. I got them when I was a bit younger and didn't know a lot about speakers, and today I would probably seek out something used, but they've served me well for about 6 years now; they're pretty indestructible and have weathered a good beating through almost 4 years of college getting blasted frequently. The bass is deep and plentiful, and the horn sound signature is there but nice if that's what you're into. You could probably get a better value buying used, but as far as new speakers go they sound really good. What will you be using them for/listening to on them?
 
Thanks guys! This will be an upgrade for my 901's which I had for the last 23 years. I think with the HT setup, these will be better than the "Direct Reflecting" :D

I have been using RF-82-II's as my main two channel set up for over a year now, I like them very much and have received many compliments from friends and other audio peers who have listened to them.

I found speaker set up was very important with these speakers. Away from the wall two or more feet, some toe in and up off the floor about 10 to 14 inches on some sort of stand.

They will really let you know if a recording is less than perfect. Good luck with them and let us know how you like them after you listen to them for a while.

I'd like to give you my thoughts on the RF 82 IIs.They do very well for home theater fronts especially in a larger room.They put out loads of quality bass and good midrange and treble for movies.For music I don't think they rank with my other speakers dedicated for music. Of course they had stiff competition with Bose 901 IIs and Klipsch LaScalas each legendary performers.Yes, I just wanted to have one system that does it all but it just didn't seem to work for me. The Bose and LaScalas also did not work very well for home theater. Like a lot of people Im still looking for the holy grail.....Cronie
 
I have a pair. I think they are very good for HT but they leave a lot to be desired to 2 channel music listening. However, speakers are very subjective so only your ears will be able to tell. For me, I think they are a little too bright, mids and highs brittle and bass not warm. That's just me. I tend to like a warmer deeper sound. Good luck.
