Klipschorn Flase wall or Enclosure?

They sure are and well out of $$ reach for me. I am very happy with these (my first Khorns) that I recently scored from an auction. One owner 1982's and in great condition. I can't ask for more...

Nice. You and I followed the same path. Have only had mine (first pair) a couple months. Wasn't looking for Khorns particularly but saw them for sale and couldn't pass them up. Mine are one owner also. Since my space wasn't "right" for Khorns I set out to make the backs. I hope one day to get them in a properly sized space with corners to see how they perform. Might also look into upgrading the crossovers at some point too. I have a set of Heresy II's that I put upgraded Crites crossovers in and titanium diaphragms in the tweeters. For now I'm just enjoying the Khorns. A large speaker can really fill a space with sound.

From your picture, they look like new. I'll bet they sound great. What are you driving them with and what sort of music do you listen to?

We recently moved into this house here in Tucson that has very high ceilings. I tried various speakers and none did the job. These Khorns certainly fit the bill. Like you said, they are room filling, wether it's wide or high, doesn't matter.
I only got these last Saturday with joy! I had both in corners but both speaker were then on the right side of the room and one was behind the couch. My hearing isn't the best anymore so I decided to switch the other speaker to the front. Hence I came looking for more info on enclosures etc. I had been investigating for a while though in anticipation of acquiring Khorns.

They have a couple of minor marks and on one bottom corner there is a small piece of veneer missing. Otherwise they are great. These were owned by an elderly couple in Phoenix.

Right now I am driving them with a pair of Dynaco Mark III's and PAS 3 pre amp. I have a MX110 McIntosh Pre amp being serviced now which should be ready soon...I hope. I have McIntosh 2100 amp and the MX112 tuner/receiver also as well as some Sansui gear. I mostly listen to vinyl. 60's, 70's and some 80's R&R, Blues, Jazz and some mix here and there. I'm only 64 yrs. old so I figure I have some listening time left with the Khorns.

What are you using driving the Khorns?

i may be upgrading the crossovers as well. But only with new caps for starters, and that's if necessary.

Nice gear there pantoramasan. I've got a few receivers that have been taking turns with the Khorns, just trying to find one I like. I've tried a Kenwood KR-6600 (56 watts), KR-9600 (160 watts) and a small Pioneer SX-434 (15 watts). Obviously with the high sensitivity of the Khorns, you can drive them with almost anything, power wise. I've kind of settled on the KR-6600 at this point. I've been considering a tube amp but wish there were someone local that I could connect with to learn and listen. I guess I haven't reached out much so that may be on me... At any rate, I listen to the same stuff you do. I had Bob Cray's Stong Persuader album on last night. I remember getting it back in the 1980's and I still love it.

I must say you have excellent taste in equipment and Music...I also have a KR-9400, Sansui G-8700 DB (160WPC) and some Marantz equipment. I hooked up the Khorns to the McIntosh 2100 w/MX112 and it sounded very nice, but not nearly as nice as with the Dynamo tube amps and pre amp. I could definitely hear the difference in the smoothness etc. Although the Dynaco's are decent, I am looking for something maybe a little better. I have never heard these speakers thru any other system so I am somewhat in the dark as to how they would sound with other tube amps.
Do you have the Khorns hooked up to 8ohm or 16ohm on your amp?

8 ohm. I've never heard a tube amp that I can remember, let alone with these speakers. I guess for that matter I've really not heard many other systems at all other than what I've been able to put together here. I've got a very diverse group of friends but none of them are into audio really. I've also got a smattering of other receivers, Yamaha and other Kenwood stuff. It's a great hobby and I enjoy trying different combinations and setups. Today I'm picking up an ADC sound shaper 110 that I'm putting with a set of Heresy HIP's and a sub to play around with. The Heresy HIP's are original and in fantastic condition. Since they're industrial ported, they need some help from an equalizer and sub I think. We'll see, half the fun is experimenting right?

If anyone cares...

I tried several tube amps with my Khorns.

George Wright 2A3, SET
McIntosh MC-30's
Transcendent SE-OTL (pair bridged)
Quad II
McIntosh MC-2102
Viva 300B SET
Jolida 305 (or was it 503?) I forget

I had several solid state amps as well.

Today, all the tube amps are gone. Were there differences? In my opinion yes but, the analogy I always give is a hamburger!

Meaning, if I give you a hamburger with zero salt on it, and then another hamburger with 10 shakes of salt on it, you will be able to tell which is which 10/10 times. If I then, swap between a hamburger with 9 shakes of salt and one with 10 shakes it will be much more difficult to discern which is which.

My experience was, as long as the amps were in the range of the smallest one, they sounded essentially the same. (meaning, not trying to play 120 db's with a 2A3 amp when a 100 watt amp would be more appropriate)

Decided I had way too much cash just sitting there so today, I've given up some shakes of salt and live with some Crown K2's.

Point well taken...I am certainly not in any way debating wether SS or tube amps are better. To each his or her own. I have listened to these Khorns with both. The McIntosh 2100 amp w/the MX112 receiver/pre-amp and now the cheapo Dynaco's and for my flavor the Dynacos are salty and delicious where the Macintosh needed salt and pepper. Just my 2 pennies. Others will have different opinions. But also let me clarify that I am primarily listening to Vinyl.

If we only had a room filled with each other's gear to listen and experiment with... Both of you guys sound very seasoned regarding nice gear and tubes. Eventually I'll find out for myself.

I too listen to vinyl but do have a CD player hooked up to the Khorns also. I've got some albums on both cd and vinyl. Interesting differences. I'm sure there are many threads on that subject.

dontmindeme,
If only...that would make things much easier in our decision making. I am seasoned alright, in age only. I have only recently delved into this higher end stereo gear recently. But now I am in Audio Nirvana with these Khorns. I am actually a neophyte in this industry but a fast learner. And like you, I do my research.

As they say, down the rabbit hole we go! Whilst enjoying my Khorns tonight, I noticed one was a lower volume, sort of muffled. Tried a few things including swapping out the receiver, still the same. Crossover maybe? At any rate, I'm off to the speaker forum for advice, then maybe a call to Bob Crites tomorrow. It plays alright, all drivers work, just muffled and lower than the other......

I'm sure you have checked all the connections etc.. But you never know. Do a double check. it is possible you missed something. Try a different CD or vinyl. Could be the recording.

Yeah, I tried a couple CDs and an album or two. Then changed receivers. Also checked all connections and did a visual on the capacitors. It's subtle but different than the other. Tomorrow I'll swap crossovers to see if it moves to the other speaker. Gotta think it's the crossover....

I guess the literature I sent you was for the early series of speakers in the 50's which were rated at 16 ohms. I wonder what year they changed to 8ohm?

So how are you coming along with your tests?

You're right, I didn't see a 16 ohm option on mine. I researched the Khorns a little some time ago and if I remember correctly, they slightly modified them as time went by. Mostly, I think after 1982? It seems I have the AA crossover and the 82 and later have a different one. I think some of it is down in the bass enclosure. I believe the 60th Anniversary is also different, driver and crossover wise. Maybe they did that to maximize the sound when they put the enclosures on.

Got to late last night to switch the crossovers so that's on my list today. Right now I'm at work....not working......ha....it's Friday.

Looks like it was the crossover.... I swapped it out to the other speaker and same problem. I've sent both off to Bob Crites to be rebuilt. Hope to have them back in a week or so, maybe longer with the Holiday next week. Frustrating though, have relatives coming for the week and really wanted to audition them! I won't get the crossovers back until after they leave.....

Sorry to hear that. At least you know what the problem was, and they probably all (Vintage Klipschorn) need cap replacing. I am planing on having the caps changed in mine as well in a few weeks. But for now it sounds good.
Please let me know how the crossover mod turns out and if you actually hear a difference.
