Klug horn for 604

There's a guy in the Altec group on FB claiming "incomparable mid range" after installing the multi cell Klug horn. I asked him to elaborate a bit on their performance, butt he didn't seem interested in doing so. I've seen the big wooden Klug multi cell horns, but wasn't aware that (better?) aftermarket 604 horns are available or that the stock multi-cell has issues that can be improved upon. Anybody have any info or experience with these you can share?

Interesting in that they are bigger, like the Urei and current Great plains version,
but "still" retain the 6 cells. all be it bigger.
Are they Wood?

Yes...wood construction. I guess he retained the multicell design to keep off axis dispersion more consistent?

So the multicell horn is the same design in 604 variants C-G and after G they introduced the Mantaray which is larger than multicell?

604_8H_III-2.jpg If you want the best performance from your 604's in the highs you want the 604's Urei used in making their time aligned monitor speakers, They were sectorial horns with a foam edge to prevent unwanted anomalies coming off the edge of the horn. The most advanced 604's being made today by Great Plains Audio feature a sectorial horn and a redesigned throat for the horn to prevent irregular midrange frequency response issues in the earlier models. The Klug horn isn't going to fix those issues. JBL corp discovered the issues when they bought UREI and that was the main reason they designed their own version of the 604 originally design by James B Lansing back in the 40's to smooth the midrange frequency response of the horn section, improve efficiency and doubling the power handling capabilities. Multicells beam the higher high frequencies that can be easily heard and measured. With room loading and proper placement in the room the response below 40 hz should flatten out quite nicely.

Hmm...well this has me thinking. I have a pair of pristine UREI 811A Monitors in the basement. They have excellent and original Altec 604 drivers with the UREI mods. I also have a pair of super clean original Altec 904 drivers with mantaray horns. As well as 604 - 8Gs in my main system. Have never had them in the same room for a comparison...

Sounds like the thing to do sometime after labor day...

I hope you can make this happen. Would be very interested in hearing the results. What crossover do you have for the -8g's?

Well I sold off the UREI 811s so the horn comparison shootout can't happen...Although the UREI horn IMO had a slightly better reach over the 604 - 8G. Still have the mantaray duplexes...
