I like the look of the old knobs, and I'll admit, the old style escutcheons.
The point reminds me of 50's automotive styling. Or breasts.
Maybe it's like a first kiss, I'l always have a place in my heart for red heads (thank you Beth Bokavoy - grade 2).
My first mac piece was a MA6100. and maybe thats why I will always adore the lathed aluminum knobs and pointy bits.
2nd piece was (is?) a MI3, sexy lights that do things I don't fully understand, but am learning. This furthered my knob/end caps adoration.
Sidenote: The awesome guy I bought the MI3 had forward dated the knobs to the newer style. Luckily he had the old ones in a baggie and I was able to swap back. Bonus, I sold the newer style knobs in Bartertown which helped finance my next purchase.
Third Mac piece came in the shape of the bad-ass amp, the MC7300. Finally I have blue sweeps. The end caps swap perfectly with some MC2105s I found at a local stereo repair shop.
Next I sold my MA6100 which I was only using the pre-amp element anyway to purchase a C32.
The C32 has lots of knobs, knurled knobs, so many knurls.
I don't like this look as much. The knurls or fluting hold dirt and grime. Bad enough the the black glass fronts show fingerprints and smudges, but god forbid some friend is over eating a crostini with brie and strawberry chutney hears a song and yelps, "dude, . . yacht rock" and turns up the Gordon Lightfoot on the turntable, getting cheese and godknowswhat in the little grooves.
Finally, I picked up a MR 77 with old knobs and pointy bits.
Nope, I almost forgot. I also picked up a CD player, the MCD7007 which is rumored to have once been owned by Aretha Franklin. It has buttons. Meh.
Anyway, you can now see I have two with new and two with old.
I said to myself, Hey self, why not head to stereo repair guy, bring him some wine and dig through his buckets o knobs and see if I can't fine some old style to swap"
So I did.
Got home and some of you will already know where this is going....
They changed the size of the shafts. old won't fit on the MC7300. Won't fit on most of the C32. Plus, nobody has the lil knobs in aluminum because the only two pieces with those are the low volume produced MI2 and MI3. And, even if you found those lil knobs, those shafts on the C32 are too big.
So, I decided to drink more until I just use my Mac pieces as what God or Gow intended, devices for listening to music.
