Knob Removal Help - stubborn Grundig 7028

I am trying to do some of the easiest work on my new old Grundig and having an issue straight out of the gate.

Tuner knob came of easily after removing that screw and the damn volume/power knob spins nicely after I removed the screw, and the screw for the other ring tuner thing but it wont come off. before I muscle this thing real hard (possibly breaking it), does anyone have a trick to free these things? Heat with a hair dryer? WD-40? Deoxit? Diet COke? I am just assuming its glue but maybe I am off?

I have 4 other grundigs like this that I will need to do the same. thanks

Well Knobs may be stuck... D5 shouldn't hurt the plastic perhaps a tad of 'gentle heat' from a hair dryer and give it time. Could tape off the face bezel and GENTLY pry here and there lifting with a small prying lever.

I have a small flathead screwdriver, covered in heatshrink (to avoid damage), to pry off stubborn knobs.

Lube the knob up a bit and then try wrapping a shoelace around it and tug. Old trick that I learned many years ago.

Be careful because it will likely go flying off into parts unknown.

I have the same Grundig with the same issue. I even tried drilling out the set screw. In the end I just left it in place. It wasn’t worth breaking the dial glass and I figured I really didn’t need to remove it to get to everything I needed to work on.

alas, the dial glass is the reason for my whole attempt in the first place! picked up a replacement off ebay that I am (was) excited to swap....

Well then you have nothing to loose. Mine is in perfect shape and I did not want to break it. The knob is held in place with a set screw, I would start by getting some oil on it in hopes it frees it up. The problem I had is the screw slot on mine was stripped. I think the set screw and the threaded housing may be two different metals which over time have a reaction causing them to almost weld together.

The set screw has most likely raised edges on on the shaft where the set screw dug in. Can you garb the shaft from the inside with needle nose or something? If you can try holding the shaft stationary while rotating knob back and forth while pulling on the knob.

Friends, my first and only success wrt radio restoration! I got the der Knob off non-destructively! some deoxit, a little hair dryer may have helped but a narrow screw driver wedged at the base and the sleeve-type shaft and twisted carefully around the base eventually helped pry it off. pretty sure it just had some pretty good glue. After a good look at this radio I found a couple other interesting items which I will put in a different post.... thanks for your comments and help.

Please keep the info coming as I am in the process of recapping and cleaning up my Grundig 7038 Majestic console; it is basically the same model as yours.

its about the damn selenium rectifier. I put up a real dumb question about it creating a different thread, I should have just googled it, and it created a massive lengthy awesome deep discussion. so I wanted to add to that one and as it fits. but here it is see pic. I think a wire is missing. there is no wire attached to the negative terminal on the SR, isnt that required?

It looks like the neg terminal is grounded to the chassis as seen in the schematic

yup. makes sense. sorry dumb post (again). it just looks like something snapped off. Learning...

the terminal is soldered to the post and passes through the mounting screw.
