Know if these are any good?

CDs mostly. sometimes i connect my laptop to the receiver and listen to some MP3s. I have started to acquire FLAC format music, but i'm not sure yet of the best way to play those. Off the computer or burned to a cd. I play my cd's on a dvd player connected to the receiver by an optical cable.

I see that a lot of people on these forums mention the Acoustic Research AR3a's. Are they really that good? Are they rare?

They're my main speakers and they're never going anywhere.

Also, you say CDs and laptop. What CD player? What amplifier and preamp? What bit rate and sample rate are the MP3s that you play on your laptop?

stick to the big names,

Acoustic research
KLH
Advent
JBL
polk
boston acoustics
klipsch

etc, and it'd hard to go wrong...even their crappy offerings are better than most.

a little more hit & miss are the offerings by mainly stereo component manufacturers
(pioneer, marantz, sansui, fisher, kenwood, etc)

best thing is to listen before you buy if possible.

a quick scan of the des moines craigslist shows a pair of advent heritage speakers for $40, another for $135, some polk monitor 12's for $225, and a number pf pioneer, sansui, fisher, and kenwood offerings....

They haven't made any for quite a while, and they don't turn up as often, but include EPI on that list....

How are these? A little more then what I wanted to spend but if they are "nirvana" then they are worth it.

Well, this review puts them somewhere like nirvana, and if you can afford the price of admission without strain, go for it. Those speakers don't come along every day.

But you can get very very good speakers for a lot less, and the reviewer's nirvana may not be your nirvana, actually. I'd suggest you live with a couple of other ($100 or less each) sets of speakers for a while, and then you'll be in a lot better position to know your nirvana when you hear it. Then you can plunk down the bigger money with confidence.

My CD player is a LG DVD player. I buy most of my music on Amazon. not sure what bit rate/sample rate (no idea what the difference between the two is)

My speakers are connected to my Pioneer receiver directly..

I may take a bt of flack for this, but your sources may be part of the problem with your sound. Middling sound in, middling sound out. If Amazon downloads is a major source, you won't get the most out of the music. It is fine for listening to, but if you are expecting great sound you won't find it there.

Peruse the forums and see if there may be a place you can upgrade first to get the source material a bit better. If you would pop for the B&W's, you would notice the lack of sound quality even more. It is possible to get a great sounding digital system, you may just need to tweak yours a bit.

There was a pair of EPI 100 for sale in my area on CL for $200. I thought that was kind of pricey for what they looked like..(condition= fair)

Get them, you'll like them. But not at that price. $100 would be a more than fair price for a fair pair of 100's on CL, imho.
