Kss-150a lost cause?

After restoring about 10 cd players, I have found a lack of success getting players that use the KSS-150a to track and handle skips as well as all the other transports.

Denon DCD-520
Sony CDP-190

Is the KSS-150a just not as good as other transports? Or would I see the tracking and scratch handling improve if I replaced them with a new KSS-210 (which basically a KSS-150a)?

Do the KSS-150a not age well, or were they always not the best performers?

I can't speak to the KSS-150A from direct experience, but after working on a lot of vintage CD players with Sony KSS pickups, it is my (admittedly non-scientifically arrived at) conclusion that some just don't age gracefully, while others seem to remain rock solid for much longer than they have a right to (under heavy use). I've observed this in a number of models of player from around 1985/86, using various KSS-12x pickup types. Some seem to have been poor designs (or at least subject to a relatively shortened service life, for whatever underlying reason) so I surmise there are likely other pickup types that are similarly marginal after ~40 years in the field.

The problem is that except for anecdotal information developed in threads like this one, no one has really quantified an actual list of pickups with a high failure rate, so far as I'm aware. The only pickup I'd say is widely known to be a bad bet at this age are the various interations of the Toshiba/Olympus TAOHS-L pickup block used in many models from 1982-85 or so.

Of course, we are also seeing failures of servo and tracking circuits now, due to aged components drifting or outright failing. That will impact the quality of the laser "lock" onto the disc data even if the pickup itself is still at or near 100%. There is a greater observable incidence of failed caps, transistors and even IC's on many players that are now 30+ years old.

To get one in that age range now that works as is, is an increasingly unlikely (and lucky) turn of events. I've had a few players that needed extensive recapping, some other passives replaced and even some transistors and IC's changed out to restore proper function. Most of these were found to be working again with their original pickups, after the above referenced work had been done.

Anecdotally, the Hitachi, Sanyo and Philips transports, they are easy to get going and plow through scratches. Cleaning grease, changing belts and 1 new gear in an FD1040 is all it's taken.
 
The Philips pickups were in a class of their own, for certain. Amongst the big Japanese manufacturers who did their own pickups (rather than sourcing one from a major OEM like Sony) Hitachi and Matsushita seem to have nailed down the best combination of longevity and reliable playback even under marginal conditions (disc damage). I've been suitably impressed with the number of 35-40+ year old players from those two that manage to play scratched CD's and even CD-R's that don't meet the redbook spec (74 minutes max playtime). Some are far better under those conditions then I'd ever expected them to be.

My experience with Sanyo pickups is pretty limited (they were an OEM supplier on a small scale, most of their pickups went in their own players, and those branded by Fisher) and Sony pickups of the mid 80's to early 90's have been somewhat bit of miss; some seem to last nearly forever, where a handful of their specific pickups appear to be far less robust.
 
JVC made a lot of their own Optima laser pickups. They seem to last forever and play many difficult to read CDs and CD-Rs.
 
@redk9258, I hadn't mentioned the JVC Optima pickups, which were typically very good, only because they aren't terribly common. Obviously, JVC used them in some of their players, and there are a few instances of them providing them to others on an OEM basis. A couple of Sansui's very best CD players used JVC Optima pickups, in fact.
