KT-120 tube

positron

New Member
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has first hand experience with the New Sensor KT-120 tube (60 watt plate dissipation)? Seems rugged enough but wonder how it sounds? Any comparisons to the EL-156? UL or triode mode?

Thanks.

hi
i've try the kt120 on my se kt88 amp for about 6 months now and i notice a big different in power and bass also warmer sounding than my GL kt88, so far no issue what so ever, very heffty tubes. One thing i do notice is that its a little microfonic as i tap on the amp chaasis i can hear it in the speakers my GL Kt88 does'nt do that.
Overall i like them and would buy another pair for spairs.

I'd be careful using them as some of the specs are not like a 6550/KT-88. Specifically, pay attention to filament current requirements. I can see how some older tube amps without any extra 'room' for extra current would be a problem.

Cheers,

David

im glad you mention it, my PTX is more than enough. i alway over kill my build especialy power suply.

That may well be, Tim614, but there are many other amps that will not have that lattitude in transformer specs. I'm willing to bet that many visitors to AK don't even know how to figure it out much less know that they're creating risk for their amps.

For me, I'll not risk my HK Citation II amp with a set for the reason of much higher filament currents. I really don't want to spend ~$400 or so on a power transformer rewind.

Cheers,

David

There is a discussion of the Tung-Sol KT120 tubes on the Dynaco Tube Audio Forum at the link below.

My impressions are similar to tim614. These are warmer sounding tubes than the Genalex Gold Lion KT88's with nice mid-bass content. They do draw more current than a KT88. As such, you should be careful that the PT in the amp you are using these tubes can take the extra current without overheating. On the photo below are the temperature readings of various parts of the test amp in degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures seen are only slightly higher (at least on this amp) than when using KT88's.

In the photo below I am using a matched octet of the Tung-Sol KT120's to test out a pair of new prototype VTA M-125 125 watt monoblock amps.

 I like the looks of those, I almost wish I had a need for 125w... If you need beta testers though :)
