KX-1030 - How smooth should the 6 Tape Control Buttons be?

Hello,
How smooth or clunky should the 6 tape control buttons be? And how best to clean and or lubricate them when refurbishing this tape deck? Everything looks pretty clean and no visible old grease or anything behind the tape panel where the buttons do their magic.
