KX-800

I picked up a clean KX-800u a awhile back and decided to look at it while waiting for parts for other projects. It would play for a few seconds then shut off. Same with FF and RW. I replaced both belts and cleaned the goo from the old belts. Reassembled and unfortunately does the same thing. If you hold the play button down it will play and sounds good. The counter works fine. I'm not sure what to check on this. Thanks for any guidance. Sorry for the duplicate post. Original i accidentally put Kf instead of KX and didn't see any way to fix it.

Did not see that forum. Thanks. It's spotless inside and everything is in great condition. Just won't stay engaged.

The torque feels pretty good. I checked while applying a little finger pressure to the drive while holding the play button and appropriate sensing levers down and it feels pretty strong. Not sure if that's a valid test method though. I generally shy away from deck repairs but this one seems to be built sensibility and is not mechanically difficult to disassemble and reassemble.

Depends on the deck, but it's possible the take-up reel isn't being driven well enough so the counter is too slow and the deck will kick out to prevent wadding up the tape around the capstan and roller. Usually this is a rubber tire that also drives the fast forward and reverse, and when it gets hard it slips. May not be true for that deck, but it's a common issue.

Any time the tape counter fails to advance at the correct rate later decks will kick it out of play.

Does it run to speed properly with the Play button held down? If it warbles likely you have a take-up driver issue.

It will automatically shut off play if it senses the EOT.. Try several tapes..

It plays perfectly as long as play button is held down. Sound is good and counter is working. I've tried several tapes in 60 and 90 minute versions and same issue. I'll get a few pics posted and maybe someone will see something. Thanks.

What is the appropriate way to ask for this to be moved to the Tape forum? I asked through the contact us tab but that apparently didn't work. Thanks again.

I double checked everything and it's perfectly clean. The back side of each gear have what looks like a shutter wheel that interacts with sensors behind it. When I first took it apart there was belt going everywhere and it took awhile to clean. I was hopeful that it was blocking those sensors but that doesn't seem the case. Hate to give up on it but I'm stuck

So....I put it back together and....it works perfectly. Makes absolutely no sense. Sometimes I guess it is better to be lucky than good :)
