Kyocera R851: enough juice for NHT 2.9?

Hi,

Any day now I will be receiving a lovely R851 receiver, from the brief glory days of Kyocera audio.

I'm looking at speakers to pair with it, and I've found a local set of NHT 2.9's for sale. The NHT's are notorious power and current hogs, and I'm wondering if the Kyocera would have enough juice to properly power them.

I do know the K-Yo is under-rated, and that it's generally regarded as pretty beefy.

From what I remember the R851 is underrated at 85 watts. Great amp, gotta love the MOSFET.

Didn't know Kyocera was ever in the audio gear buisness. I have one of their cell phone's, but even that seems a rarity. Anything NHT's nice stuff. Can't imagine them not being happy with a solid 50 to 100W RMS. Really not looking like you're hurting for decent speakers over there, though.

Have a Kyocera R-861 and it's a beast. Made extremely well and one of the nicest listening receivers made in my opinion. Only gripe I have about it is the slider volume control... I just prefer rotary.

Can the Kyocera drive it? Of course.

It's a question of "How fast do you want to go?"

I doubt this helps much but... I have 2.5i's and they sound quite decent with my > 50WPC receivers (Mitsu @ 60wpc, Marantz @ 65wpc, and HK @ 70wpc) but it's been my experience lately that on the low end only the HK delivers anything resembling satisfying punch on kickdrums. The Marantz is almost there.

I gather having above average current delivering capability helps. I also think extra power definitely helps bring out the midrange on my speakers. My 25wpc Concept couldn't make it happen with those speakers and was boomy on the bottom end, too.

I have no idea if the 2.9's are anything like the 2.5's, but probably.

This combo of HK and NHT has been extremely pleasing of late. So if the Kyocera can deliver anything like the HK you're in for good times I would think.

IIWY I'd jump all over those NHTs -- you can always try and upgrade/trade.

things equalized now, and searching for speakers up to $1000...
