La Scala & Heresy Distorting w/ NAD

I have a pair of La Scalas with AL x-overs. connected with a NAD 1020 pre amp and NAD 2140 amp. While listening, all of a sudden the horns were distorting.

So I connect my Heresys to the NAD. Same thing. So I believe its the NAD that is bad,

My question is if this NAD system is worth it to have repaired or would it be better to buy another receiver that better compliments the La Scalas?

Clean the controls and check the connections first.

If it turns out the NAD is (are) bad, find a nice Sansui to replace it (prejudice here).
 
I would find ANY amp temporary just to see if the NAD is the problem . Like already said , could be dirty controls and switches .
 
I hooked them up to an old Pioneer SX-424 receiver that I found in the garage and the LS and Heresys are singing once again.. no distortion

So it is the NAD. I'm gonna be in the market for a receiver and amp that better compliments my speakers.
 
I power my Heresy II's with a pair of Dynaco Mrk III's (60 watt monoblocks). Since I went to tubes, I vowed to myself I'd never run horn loaded speakers on solid state anymore.
Mind you, my preamp is the Soundcraftsmen PE2217-R (solid state) for now ;o)_~

I have owned tubes and my late Dad before me(Fisher/McIntosh). But now that I am retired I find myself enjoying Blurays and HD surround sound. If I could afford different systems in different rooms :sigh: different story. I would have another McIntosh.. after 40 years and so many different amps etc I have found some Yamaha AVR amps on "Pure Direct" mode for stereo :music: has a wonderfull sound on my Heritage speakers. My very small den is just wide and deep enough(10X14) that my HT system shakes the room with no clipping and clean audio. I know AVR's and SS amps and CD music is not popular to some but very few CD sound like crap on my Cornwalls(fronts on HT).My AVR and 55" LCD/LED TV are on 14 hours a day now. Grand Kids playing Wii etc I find the many features on the HD AVR I have, look and sound great. Maintance/cost on tubes being on this long everyday and small chrildren looking at them....:no: lets pull one out and look at it :tears:ask me how I know. Just not for me at this time, maybe later but when I read SS on horns are harsh, CD music is compressed and sounds bad.... I just laugh. Trust me my Revox reel to reel on "Straight Analog" has a warm tone to it on a 2 year old $1,300.00 AVR that has been a plug and play(so far)... room correction function matched my Heritage and Reference speakers Great for Bluray HD audio. I was told that they would sound crappy together........not timber matched. THEY were wrong. I did use my SPL meter to tweak them some for my hearing. Enjoy what ever you have on a Klipsch Heritage :thmbsp: most will sound just fine.
 
I also found a Sansui 221, 3300, and Pioneer SX650 receiver in the garage.

I tested them all, and decided that the Sansui 221 will be running my La Scalas from now on until I can afford to purchase a newer HDMI Receiver.

The Yamaha AVR with 130 WPC seem to work nice with Heritage speakers. My 2 1/2 year old RX-V1900 HD 7.1 sounds great 130 WPC on Pure Direct or Straight(no processor) mode and my two Cornwalls. With the Straight mode the subs play..:thmbsp: My next AVR will be a RX- A3010 HD AVR it has more power and features. I usually upgrade AVR every 3 to 4 years. By then the prices will drop like they did when I got my 1900 the RX-A1000/2000/3000 came out now the RX-A 1010/2010/3010 are out. Waiting on my extended warranty(Best Buy) to run out before I sell it and upgrade. I have had a lot of different seperates and tubes and SS on my Cornwalls in the last 30 plus years and I was suprised how nice a Yamaha AVR amps match up with my Corns or my HII. I have them in a very small den so I bet that helps not having to push the amps hard. I know none of the AVR amps really make what they claim but with Heritage speakers it did not matter my Yamaha does just fine even on HT duty, my Corns are fronts on my 5.2 stsyem. The Denon 4311CI would be my other pick for Heritage speakers, friend of mine has one on his Belle Klipsch:thmbsp: I am sure there are others that will sound just fine but these two I have owned or listened too. Good hunting.

I have a pair of NAD 2150 amps running mono and was running them through a NAD 3150 and was getting some distortion out of the right channel. I thought it was the 3150 I was using as preamp so I switched it out with a Concept 5.5 as a preamp. Same problem, still had the distortion on the right side. I cleaned the A-B button and the on/off switch (as bentpencil mentioned)on the amp to the right channel and no more problems. It might save you some money if you try and clean the switches if you haven't already tried it.
 
I had a Mcintosh MC 275 and sold it in an emergency money crunch situation. Now I'm running a Mac MC2200 solid state and it's very very close to the tube amp.
