La Scala Pros with No Drivers - What do I put in them?

Hi All,

OK, so I'm picking up a pair of LaScala Pro cabs tomorrow for the princely sum of $0, and they are only 1/2 hour away. They are the one-piece cab, not the separates.

BUT, now I have to fill them, and going with real Klipsch or Crites drivers will not be cost effective. Any thoughts on less expensive Parts Express, et al drivers?

Was looking at the Eminence Kappa 15C for the woofer.

Thoughts?

i don't know the details on 'off brand' drivers...but, over the many years of my ownership of Klipsch (specifically LaScalas among others) I HAVE heard many instances of someone buying a replacement driver....only to be let down by the performance and going back to the Klipsch driver (which turns out, is a pretty darn good driver for this application)

In my opinion, the correct driver that you want is the Klipsch K-33. You can also use the Klipsch K43 which is a heavy duty version....but, you will lose some bass extension.

If this is for home use, the K33 is a great driver and will dig a bit deeper than the K43.

My understanding is Bob (Crites) ordered drivers from the same manufacturer with the same TS parameters so they should be essentially the same driver....

Personally, I wouldn't spend the extra funds for the cast frame version when it seems the cheaper stamped frame version works just fine.

You might also find someone on the Klipsch forum who's got some for sale from time to time. (I've bought 5 K33's that I'm using to populate my MWM bass bins instead of the more expensive K43)

As I understand, the K33 is "around" $125, maybe $150 (I honestly have no clue if you want the truth....but they're not terribly expensive)

Buying another brand, especially if it's not perfectly designed for that type cabinet, might be more expensive in the long run.
 
I'm building a set of LS with 1" BB ply now for a friend/customer. He bought the Crites cast 15", PD5VH Atlas ( K-55) and the K-77M tweeter. He already has a custom xover. I have A-B compared the K33 against the Crites of 15c but I've seen graphs on the Klipsch forum of the measures of the K-33, K-43, K-33 Square magnet and a 15" no name Eminence 15" woofer I had with similar T/S specs. They would all "work" but there were some trade offs. There's a good thread at the Klipsch forum on this. Claude raves over the 15C giving higher mids at trade off of less low bass.

Probably can't go wrong with the K-33. Speaker Exchange sells them for $129 plus shipping.
 
I know in your other thread, you said you found a source.... so this is for the casual reader.

You should be able to go directly to Klipsch and get replacement parts. Only downside is, I think they will want the serial number off said speaker. So, if you don't have that (or are creating a copy) that might bite you in the ankle.
