La Scalas for 1k

I have a chance to buy a pair of La Scalas for 1k. Based on the serial #s the speakers date to 1989, which I believe is thee AL-3 crossover.

I have not heard them yet but I'm told everything works. The downside is that they are black. Cosmetically they are in decent shape.

Decent deal for $1,000?

PS. I own Herseys and like them but interested in owning/hearing La Scalas or Cornwalls..

Seems maybe on the mid to high end from what I've seen and read.

Flat black (industrial) or gloss black? If the former, too much. If the piano finish, not bad.

For "industrial" black or raw birch, that it way too high (by at least $200 IMO), but markets vary. 1989 is not all that new, so I would plan on doing some crossover work on them too, so if they have not been recapped or upgraded with Crites parts, factor that into the value as well.

Black could also indicate that they spent some time as PA speakers, and were pushed hard. Check the tweeters.

True, but new diaphragms are inexpensive and easy. Finding one blown can sure help with negotiations though.
