Ladies and Gentlemen, the Canton S Plus Speakers

Well a quick trip to Goodwill yielded these, a pristine pair of Canton Plus S speakers. $20 for the pair. I've got a pair of their LE102 bookshelf speakers which I am quite happy with, so I'm already a bit of a fan. Got home and hooked them up and I'm pretty happy with them. Quite a bit like the Minimus 7 but I'd say maybe a bit more lively. Anyone have any experience with these?

In their size range the Plus S are hard to beat. They are the follow-on for the GL 210, and an improvement imho with the move to a 25mm tweeter instead of the 19mm dome in the GL 210.

I have owned both, and within their size limitations they are great speakers. For small systems, or for use as surround speakers in a small AV system they are just great sounding speakers.

The Plus S has a friend, the Plus C 12" passive subwoofer. The C sub is designed to be used with the S and needs no adjustments to play perfectly together.

Cheers,
James

edit: The plus C has a dual voice-coil driver and the box has 2 individual crossovers for L&R. The Plus C is wired to the amp and the Plus are wired to the sub. The signal passes unaltered through the sub to the S's.

Bought my pair of Plus S after I was super impressed by my GL-260.
And I totally agree,as great small speakers go,they are right up there with the ADS L200 & Min7.
I have'nt picked up a Plus C just yet,but plan on doing so when the funds are there to do so.

Great GW score if I must say so myself, congrats .

Yeah add me to the Canton fanboy ranks...

I can't compare with the L200, but IMO the Plus S blows the Minimus 7 out of the water.
I agree completely.

But we cant completely ignore the fact that the Min7 has a ton of fans and they cant all be wrong.
So their popularity generally makes them the standard by which the others typically get judged.
Furthermore they are still a pretty nice small speaker by most all accounts.

Also the OP mentioned the Min7 as what he was comparing his Plus S to.
Thus my comment about them was in reference to that comparison.

If I were to rank the three speakers I mentioned it would look like this:
1. Canton Plus S (Best).
2. ADS L200 (Better).
3. Realistic Min7 / Optimus Pro7 (Good).

Hope that makes my POV a bit clearer...

4 speakers mentioned. :) (I am discounting the GL 260 as "being mentioned" because it is in a different size class)
The GL 210 fits in there somewhere under the +S. But since I have never heard the L200 or M(-)7 I do not have a frame of reference.

Cheers,
James

edit: Note that I do love the GL 260, no disrespect intended. I own 3 pairs of them.

Didn't we have a thread recently regarding why the Min 7 was so popular? I think it basically came down to price and availability. Even though Canton is a big speaker company, in the US, they're hardly a household name. And I'm pretty sure you could never have bought a new pair of Plus S or L200s for $60 (the Min 7 on-sale price).

Plus S new price was around €200 per box, so, €400/pair.

Was the Plus S still around after euro conversion? My Plus S's (bought used) came with the original box, two speakers per box, and it's stamped "Made in West Germany", so figure it's from 1991 or earlier.

The info that I found was that the +S was made from 1984 to 2002. The Euro showed up on 1-1-2002 as far as I can remember. So in reality the price probably changed a fair amount over the years and they would have been sold in Euros for only a short time.

Wow, that's a really long time for an electronic product to be on the market, relatively unchanged, I assume.

The Plus S can also be found with walnut veneer, but that is fairly rare. I found a pair that I gave my daughter for her 5.1 system. Mostly they will have black or white cabs.

So I was lucky enough to run across a pair of Canton S speakers recently, ‘woodies no less.
In casual listening compared to a pair of recapped Minimus 7’s as well as some Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble satellites, I would say the S’s are clearly better, in fact the best small speaker I have heard. Imaging is clearer and larger, they just don’t sound like little speakers.
In fact hook them up with a sub (sadly the Canton C was not available) and you’d be hard pressed to believe you are not listening to a much larger system, impressive.
