Lady Gaga and her performance at the Oscars....WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

she's different to the halfwits that make up the modern day pop scene. I don't like her music particularly. But she's talked extensively about being Bullied. She has a great voice. For teens she's a good role model. Better than most of the assclowns the young listen to. Leave her alone.
 
I saw her do a performance on the Today show where she started by singing Someone To Watch Over Me.That was my first indication that she had some real talent.The Oscar performance was just sublime.

While some may have been awed I heard where the limits of her vocal range and talents are. My girlfriend was watching in the living room spellbound as I was doing more work on my A/V production studio in the back room of our house. On one of numerous trips to the refrigerator I stopped for a short while to observe during the Sound of Music bit. My GF gushed "Isn't she great?" and my response was "Compared to who?" She then made the statement that Gaga is one of the greatest singers ever. Not feeling up to a confrontation I shook my head and walked away.

After the show was over I came back out and asked her if she'd ever listened to Julie Andrews sing and she said no. I then asked her if she'd ever heard of Ella Fitzgerald or Jo Stafford, again the answer was no. Since I don't have any Julie Andrews on vinyl I then played some Ella & Jo recordings for her and asked if Gaga could duplicate what she'd just heard. Again the answer was no. I told her people's points of reference to anything are based upon what they know and not what they don't know. Gaga doesn't have the upper range or much of anything else Julie Andrews did on the movie soundtrack, they're two very different vocalists with very different training & skill levels.

In the interest of fairness I just went to YouTube and downloaded both Gaga's and Julie's versions of the tunes and gave them the A-B test. No comparison to my ears, like summer stock or community theater vs headlining on Broadway nightly. I know others may hear things differently than I do and that's what makes us individuals.
 
People always fear what is different. Fear manifests itself as hate. Pretty simple stuff from a psychological standpoint.

Same terrible things said about Hendrix, Stones or even the Beatles when I was young.

It's more an indictment on those throwing stones than on the artist. A little introspect thought would clear this thread up. :smoke:

Um, it is not always fear. Sometimes it is just a dislike for something, you know, like squash. Save the pop psych lecture for the pop psych forum.


As to Lady Ga Ga, I like a lot of her pop stuff and I like her duets with Mr. Bennett. Her SOM performance was also good.

My own feeling is she is a good singer, certainly better than I had thought. But I do agree not one of the greats. Not up to that level. But she is pretty good. Her partnering with Tony on But Beautiful was pretty good. She has a sweet tone at times. Not gonna gush on her oscar performance but it was competent.

Huh. Or maybe you simply haven't taken the time to find the extremely talented African American singers making great music today. I'll start you off with Audra McDonald.
 
What I thought about Lady Gaga's performance is that she shows that she cares. That performance had echoes of the early to mid-60s performances of the best of that day. I admire her. My kids all love her. My oldest has seen her perform twice. I'm trying to make arrangements to take the family to see her with Tony Bennett at Tanglewood.

For me, she has shown that she has courage.
She went under the tutelage of a demanding voice coach for six months specifically for this performance. When you're already a star, yet you have the courage to do that because you care about your art, it says a lot for your character as well as your drive. Folks are comparing her to the originals. I'd compare her favorably, instead, to Linda Rondstat's late '80s flirtation with the American Songbook with Nelson Riddle. Both were good, but only Gaga seems like she'd stand up to repeated listenings.

I'm glad we haven't seen the last of her. She has something to offer and is inspiring for the young.

When I listened to Lady Ga Ga doing "The Sound of Music" I thought of another female singer that gobsmacked the music world with a such a performance. Natalie Cole, Unforgettable... with Love (1991). I remember in interviews at the time that she told of going to a voice coach to get the phrasing, pitch, and diction correct. Unforgettable remains one of my favorite albums of all time, I still get shivers when I listen to "Unforgettable" from this album. Reading through the online trade magazines it seems Lady Ga Ga is indeed working on an album of show tune covers, we will see. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" it would be interesting to see what Lady Ga Ga could do with this one.
