Got around to replacing the lamps on my 2238 and surprise, surprise, surprise, the plastic tabs the retaining screws pass through were broken. Some previous owner used some black vinyl tape to hold the lamp plate in place. Naturally this won't do long term so I came up with a more permanent solution.
Materials I used:
20 gauge galvanized wire
heat shrink
Epoxy
The primary objective is to get a retaining loop anchored to the lamp housing and the process is pretty straight forward.
Make a loop for the screw to pass through, bend a 'step' up in the wire and then create a 90 degree bend. On the long end that sits on the lamp housing, I put some heat shrink on the wire. My thought was the epoxy would bond better to that than galvanized wire, but in the end the epoxy is going to hold the retaining unit in place regardless.
I just installed a retaining wire at each end, however you could easily add more if one wanted. Two seems adequate to me.
I hope folks find some value in this and/or can improve on it.
