Large Advent Finishes?

Chip - HP

Super Member
Yesterday I picked up a pair of Large Advents (SNs A39271 and A40833) ... the cabinets and grill covers are in very good condition (not perfect ... but very good) ... the paperwork is still on the backs of both ... the woofers need refoaming (as has been my experience with the other 4 pairs of Large Advents that I have acquired).

One speaker (the A39271 ... on the right in each pic) has a darker finish than the other ... the finish on the back is different also ... I am assuming (but have no confirmation) that these speakers were purchased as a pair ... did Advent offer different finishes or did they change the finish color of the Large Advents during their production?

Funny I too ran into a pair in this case of AR3's one was lighter better wood while the other was darker and rougher looking wood. My projects are stacking up so I passed but wondered why the vast difference other than a miss matched pair. I hope someone can help you on this and I will just set back and read.

You passed on functioning pair of AR3's, because the veneers didn't match, and/or, you have too many projects? :yikes:
Please, tell me they were hideously expensive, and an hours drive away, and that's the reason you passed? Please pretty, please!

The veneer appears to be the same on mine ... walnut ... it's just the color of the finishes ...

That is so different and would make me wonder also. No doubt there is a story that goes with it. Bet you can fix them up to look great.

Saint Johnny, yes I do have a pile of projects. Also redoing the back of the house that includes a audio room. Hate like the devil to pass on cool stuff but in this case it made sense.

I'd guess they were from different production runs. They could have changed the finish supplier, but even with the same brand you can get changes from batch to batch. Then there's the variables of who is doing the finish work, temperature, & humidity...

As to how you got such a spread in serial numbers - maybe one was a warranty replacement or something as simple as the last one off one pallet & the first one off another.
