What models present the best value in high end late 1970's Technics turntables, and what should I expect to pay for turnkey models in very good condition?

Up your year to 1983 and get a SL-7 or SL-10 if your looking for "Turnkey" tables. I've had a couple of both and they were the easiest to setup, and their performance & sound was superb. Ran a SL-7 with a NOS Shure V15IV stylus and was floored with the reproduction. I could also say some great things about the SL-1200 series, but I will leave that to others.

even though it is slighty older it is hard to beat an sl-1100 with any of those mentioned except for the sl-10 IMO, just remember the sl-1200 is a smaller version of the sl-1100..

picked up an SL-5 recently and will be hooking it up today. Looks to have the original stylus and doesn't even appear to have been used (was in the original box with cords still wire tied). I'll be running it head to head with my Pioneer PL-12D which has a Shure 995ED (never heard of this cartridge). Soon find out what I like and don't like. Have quite a variety to test with from Jazz to Funk to Classic to Contemporary to Rock, etc. I'll post my thoughts tonight, of if more time is required in the coming days. Oh, cost me $10 each, the Pioneer also had the manual and a spare M75ECS cartridge and two more styli. Pioneer works, but the belt is stretched and needs to be replaced so the comparison won't include "warble" or Wow since the Technics is DD. I know, not the best comparison. Linear tracking VS "S" arm? Whatever.

Best Technics tables ever,

SP-10 Mk II and III,
SP-15
SP-25

SL-1000 is superb
SL-1100 is also superb!
SL-1200 is also excellent
SL-1600 is one of the best full automatics, the SL-1650 is one of the best changers ever made
SL-1700

SL-1300 is nice when working but cueing and automation are commonly needing repair (A common defect when new and difficult to repair especially so with SL-1300 Mk II models) None of the SL series linears are even in the same room with my choices (P-Mount cartridge choices are also very limited and no specialty stylus options). The SL-D 1, 2, and 3 and the SL-Q lineup are also recommended buys and inexpensive.

Where did you find these for $10.00 each?

The SL-1300 MK 2 (after doing the repair) is my current favorite for a fully automatic table.

I love my SL-1300 and the cueing mechanism is rock solid.......:thmbsp:

As Chuck says, rock solid. I have an SL-1400 and it is a work horse. Sounds great and no issues with cueing. I have an SL-1300MK2 that HAS cueing issues, but is my favorite table by far. I use it as a manual table and it works great for that:thmbsp:

To tide me over, and based on your comments, which would I be best keeping till finding a better TT, my Pioneer PL-12D or the Tech. SL-5? I'm not sure I'm getting enough signal from either cartridge. I have a Fisher RS-1080 with no manual so don't know what the phono inputs are rated, but guessing around 250mv (is that correct?).

One of my rigs uses the SL 1300 and has yet to miss a beat. It is teamed up with a Yamaha CR 1020 and Polk 7b's.
I have been contemplating a new cartridge for it but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Use my SL-10 and SL-7 more than I ever would have thought, getting lazy I guess :)

They both sound great, but the SL-10 has a bit of a thump when I turn up the volume, maybe hard grease? Gotta start a thread about that.

Both of these linear trackers seem really resistant to footfalls and feedback from the speakers.
