Im wanting to get into mid to late 1970's Technics Gear and i have a couple of units on my list but cant decide. Should i go with a receiver or an integrated amplifier? Both are around the same years. Here are my choices...

Technics SA-600 70wpc RMS 90db
Technics SU-7700 50wpc RMS 84db
Technics SU-8077 60wpc RMS 100db

Cheers!

I was going to say the same thing. The New Class A stuff that they put out in 1980 was good stuff. I just landed an SU-V6 the other day for about $100.

Between the two that you mentioned I would say the SA-600 because it has a bit more power.

Here is good Technics information site...

I will definitely give it a look. I had a class A integrated i gave my brother for his living room from the late 80s that is 130wpc. Totally rocks but i was wanting to get back into the silverface gear.

The Technics SU-7700 is a nice sounding mid-range amp, used to listen too mine regularly (on a daily basis).
The VU meters look pretty cool too.

Heres what I did with my Technics separates, SU-7700, ST-7300, RS-615 and SH-8020, maybe the pictures will give you some inspiration (if someone else has some pictures of the receiver it would help balance it out a bit :D )

They sound great and look the part if you were thinking of putting them in a rack/stand.

Im gonna look more into the new class A stuff from the early 80s and see what i can find. I just need something that will bring out my DIY Speakers. And i know from past experiance with smaller 70s technics gear they have a nice warm rich sound. Thanks for the fast replies!

The silver face New Class A stuff from the early 80s is harder to find than the later black face stuff. There is a black face SU-V707 on the Bay right now for $130 (it still looks to have an aluminum face).

I really lucked out in finding that SU-V6. First of all, it wasn't listed very long (only a couple of days) so there wasn't too much interest in it. Also, the seller was local so I saved on the shipping by picking it up locally.

I originally owned the lowly SU-V2 back in 1980 (40 WPC @0.03% THD). It was a nice amp but I sold it when I bought my NAD 7140 receiver.

If you can't find any silver faced New Class A stuff then the units that you listed would still be a great choice.

IMO, looks wise the SA-700 wins hands down.

It has a steel bottom, unlike the SA-600 and lower models. (they had pressboard bottoms)

It has plenty of power, but a bit more laid back character than the later New Class A stuff.

The SU-Vx and Vxxx stuff has a more powerful, less colored sound IMO.

Much more flexibility with the SU-V integrateds, with 2 phono inputs and variable loading for MM and MC.

My SU-V9 lead a hard life, but I wouldn't get rid of it and would jump on the chance to find a prettier one if it comes along.

I had a SA5370 receiver as my firststereo. My friend had a Technics integrated from the same era.

The integrated sounded very nice. I was never totally satisfied with my receiver's sound.

YMMV

Man! Yeah i have the Technics SU-V707 in my watch list along with an Technics SU-8077. Some nice gear being posted here on this thread. I appreciate all of the replies! Ya'll are just making it harder on me to choose..lol I would like a receiver to do to space but i do like a separate system a lot. Decisions Decisions!

Hmm, that SU-V9 looks very similar to a Technics amp I remember from my childhood in our lounge... Ill have to ask the folks what became of it! Are they very sought after?

Sa 700

Thats the first receiver I,ve seen with speaker protection fuses.
Monday I had to install inline fuses to my speakers before I
fired up the Phase Linear 400 I just got.

Only by people who have heard them. ;) Many audiophools turn their nose up at Technics gear due to a lack of snob appeal. :D
