Latest additions of vinyl to regular life. More signs of comeback.

Blue Shadow

Waiting for Vintage Gear from this century
We have seen TTs in commercials for all manner of things and the occasional glimpse of one in TV shows.

Where are some of the latest phono viewings, mentions and such that show a return to vinyl?

Here are a couple from radio.

WXPN, a singer-songwriter and lots of other stuff college? radio station Univ of Penn, that has David Dye doing the syndicated World Cafe now has a tagline of Vinyl at Heart. David also closes his show with Final Vinyl. If he is just playing one record, where does Vinyl at Heart come from? Dreaming, I guess.

WMGK, the classic rock station, which believes its 300-song playlist is monstrous and without equal now has a contest with the standard winners getting the first 5 Led Zeppelin album reissues. Grand prize adds a turntable to the bounty and gets the box set.

I very recently spotted a nice vintage TT in a "know the difference" Belvedere Vodka TV ad... looked for it on YouTube, but sadly couldn't find it.

My wife recently pointed out to me a couple of turntables on the set of the Young and the Restless. One was a Thorens. I couldn't tell what the other one was.

On the show American Pickers I saw the guys pick up two vintage turntables for about $200, based on the mostly plastic construction I thought they overpaid.

Target had an ad in their circular yesterday BOGO %50 off. Online only but probably perfect for the grandparent Christmas shopping for these new fangled big black discs all the kids are buying.

Tony Stark appeared to be rocking an Audio-Technica deck. I would imagine a guy like him would have a bit more expensive taste.

"We live in a cynical, cynical world." Jerry McGuire

Perhaps, just perhaps not everything is so well contrived and executed by the evil Hollyweird product placers, perhaps a set designer or director simply places items in their sets because it is their pleasure/artistic vision.

In the movie Hannah and her sisters Woody has a scene in a record store's Jazz section and Max Van Sydow has a turntable in his spartan room.

Sadly, that's happening a lot these days. Many vinyl newbies are impulse buying any vintage turntable they come across. No matter if it's junk or not. Hopefully this forum will help educate them on turntables in general and prevent them from getting hosed.

Vinyl at heart was also a contest on XPN to win a turntable. Buuuuut it was a Crosely.

My local classic rock station CD105.9 talks a lot about vinyl and sometimes let people win some of the new releases.

BAM (Books A Million) released a Christmas sale catalog with two pages devoted to "A Very Vinyl Christmas" featuring a bunch of albums and several pseudo-retro Crosleys.

I just binge watched a funny show on Netflix called Maron. Kinda a darker Larry David show.

Second season episode White Truck has Marc Maron going into a record store, dealing with a know it all employee who makes fun of him for buying Depeche Mode. The employee introduces him to Chinese Tube Amp. Marc buys a Mcintosh set up and has his friend over to listen to vinyl who can't tell the difference between it and his iPod Nano. :lmao:

I could also see Tony Stark being the sort of guy to just say, "I need a turntable," have one ordered, and then modify it himself if it's not up to his expectations.

I'd expect a Rockport Sirius, or maybe a Clearaudio Statement in Tony Stark's place.

Well, that is Woody Allen he is not NORMAL.

Their fixed it for you. :D

On a recent episode of "What happen to my family", on the Korean Broad Casting Network KBS, the Director has a turntable and his step brother comes in and picks up a record and they discuss the title, if I recall the LP is an Elton John Record. The older Director guy gets all worried as the younger guy messes with his records as he is very anal. The step brother like in many of these dramas and sitcoms is from a teen idol band. The Koreans have what is called KPOP which is Korean pop bands. A large amount of them are groups of about 7 either young men, or young women, singing pop songs and dancing and are very popular.

In the movie "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World," Kiera Knightly's collection is so important to her that it's necessary to save before fleeing her home. Later on in her adventure, she happens across a small, portable turntable and is able to introduce her traveling companion to the wondrous world of vinyl, and can give an example of how much richer and deep the music sounds.

On an unrelated note, does it bother anyone else when somebody touts the merits of the audio quality of the format on poor sounding equipment? That scene in the movie bothered me more than it should have! Lol
