Le Mans, 60 years ago today

w00t! Almost 12 hours in and the GTE Pro Corvette is right on the tail of the leading Aston Martin. I love this! Gotta love onboard cameras!

Heh. The Corvette just pitted, changed drivers to Tommy Milner, and he's in second place. Real close to the Aston that Gavin Oliver just overtook.

Racing. It's so silly.

And now the Corvette shows in scoring as 1:22 behind. That's BS. They just mentioned that the Aston and Corvette are running similar lap times and the Aston is coming in for a pit stop shortly.

1:22 seriously?

It sucks that the scoring is not accurate. I know that car is within 20 seconds (and I'm being generous, it's lower than that) on that Aston Martin.

Either way, the Corvette is right there.

The new Ford GT40 entry in '16 will not be competing in a class that will enable it to win an overall championship like in the mid '60s to later '60s. It will compete in GTE Pro, like the Corvette is this year.

It will be competing against models such as the Aston Martin Vantage V8, Ferrari 458, Porsche 911 RSR, and the Corvette C7R and whatever else that might enter before '16. These models might not compete at that time, dunno.

The news coverage is terrible. I can see that the Corvette is behind the Aston but cannot tell how much. It does look like the Aston is lapping about 1 - 2 seconds faster, consistently.

It looks like the Corvette is about 1 minute behind. I think.

The Corvette is still leading GTE Pro, with about 3.5 hours to go.

No, now the scoresheet shows a Ferrari in the lead by 30 seconds.

Eh, the scoring is still wonky. It'll take a bit to sort it out.

And the Corvette is indeed in 2nd, but they're gaining a sec or two a lap on the Ferrari. Behind now by roughly 21 seconds.

Porsche is crushing it. 1st and 2nd place, Audi 3rd, 4th, 5th. A lap between 2nd and 3rd.

There is 3 hours to go, no doubt there will be some surprises.

In France for work this week; alas we had to go left.

Even Group B rallying in the Eighties looked hairy. I like safety but it is boring.

That's why they banned it. In the end, the group A cars became just as fast.

Group Bead interesting, because is basically gave the manufacturers a blank sheet of paper. Cars like the Ford RS200 and Lancia Stratos had no production equivalents.

Even good old Austin-Rover (or whatever they were called at the time) came up with something interesting :

"Hmmmm... We need a rally car. Let's take a Metro, take out the engine from the front, and put a Rover V8 engine with two cylinders lopped off where the back seat should be".

The Corvette is again in 1st in class, with a 5 lap cushion between it and 2nd.

The Ferrari that was challenging the Corvette started losing speed about an hour ago, pitted, and then pushed into the garage. They had transmission problems, and lost several laps.

If the Corvette can hold it together for 43 minutes, they'll win their class. Good show!

Congratulations to the Corvette that won the GTE Pro class! Well done!

The next WEC race isn't until Aug 30th, the 6 Hours of Nurburgring.

Really, I'm here for work.
Amsterdam (2x), Poland and 5 days in France.
OK - I did get to see memorable sites in each - not 100% work.

But then, the day after I get back I'll be instructing at a drivers school at Lime Rock in CT.

Yep. Corvette wins with 5 lap advantage over second place. And, they did it with one car in the race.

Great performance by Porsche too, with the 1 and 2.

Really crappy coverage by Fox on the tv. Last night's coverage at 8 pm pac time was cut short by 40 minutes due to a tied soccer match. Low rez broadcast with the image only covering 1/2 of the tv screen, but with sports scores constantly scrolling across the bottom of the screen. No intervals shown or even announced, all cars mixed together in the standings instead of grouping them by class.

Really pitiful, Fox, if you're not going to put any effort into the presentation, don't do it. I don't think Varsha and the rest of the crew were even there in LeMans.

Even worse, I set the dvr to capture what I thought was going to be the end of the race plus 30 minutes or so of the presentations only to see the program stop with 37 seconds left in the race. You gotta be kidding me.
