Leak Sandwich

HepcatWilly

Just trying to be Hepful
I came across an odd speaker recently called the "HJ Leak Sandwich 200"

They looked really weird, with a white woofer and purple tweeters, some kind of 1980's nightmare. That said, the cabinet quality is top notch.

I have to say, they sound really quite good, particularly with vocals. What I like about them compared with other bookshelf speakers their size, is that they are extremely crisp, not smeary like many ported speaks I've listened to (my personal audio opinion). Bass lacks a bit, but it's clean.

Anyone know anything about these? I've found limited information on the Sandwich, mostly the original version, which seems both groundbreaking and a bit flawed.

Overall, these are really great for their size, and are edging out the AR4x (too dark), Polk Monitor 4 (unbalanced), Baltec 30 (smeary), and even the Allison AL-105 (lacking bass) for overall pleasing sound. They don't hold a candle to the Allison Sixes though...

Those are quality speakers. Which doesn't mean they sound good. But they were serious speakers; well made and with an interesting design.

Good catch! Hold on to them.

Had a pair of Leak speakers. 2-8in. sandwich woofers with what appeared to be lead spot spirals on them, a mid that was about 3 in. and a dome tweeter.

Wonderful sound. Should never have let them go.

I just picked up a pair of these Leak Sandwich 200 's, I love the way they sound. Crisp and airy, to my ears. They might take the place of the University (by Altec) MiniFlex 3A's in the office. Getting enough power out of a little Sansui 210 to be plenty loud, although I have to turn the volume knob up about halfway to get more than moderate volume. I just need to pick up some velcro to get the metal screen back on the front. I was going to open them up to see what the crossover looks like, but I don't see a way in without removing a speaker... These have proper binding posts installed on the back by the previous owner.
