Leak Sandwich

I bought a pair of Leak Sandwich speakers off CL. These have the 13" woofers. One has a slight rattle and I think it needs to be rotated 180. I removed the screws but I couldn't get it to turn. Is there a special trick to rotating these woofers?

Some speakers are held in with a sealant or putty. Try prying carefully around the edges of the basket to lift it and rotate it.

Hey ya EV Boy, have a look at the back of your speakers, there should be a screw you need to undo as there should be a metal
rod which screws into a wooden block which is connected to the woofer magnet to give the speakers extra bracing........me thinks. :scratch2:

Well, I'll be damned! You're right. I undid the screw and then I could rotate the woofer. Thanks a lot. I never would have figured that out by myself.

Did the rotation alone sort out the problem or did you have to do further work?

I have a pair if the original Leak Sandwich (13 inch bass two way) and was thinking of putting a super tweeter in from about 8KHz upwards. I was thinking of using a ribbon tweeter in its own enclosure, so as not to ruin the original speaker. It seems that the original 'tweeter' used is more of an upper mid by today's standards.

Has anyone tried this?

EVboy did you get a look at the crossover in the leak? Worth a look just to get a felling for the handmade aspect of this box you can channel the old British guy that glued these together it's enlightening. Or is it just me that likes to see things that were built by people not machines.

It may be too late to rotate the woofers - I've had two pairs of Leaks where the woofer had sagged on the suspension so much that they could not be restored without removing the doped cloth suspension (which was difficult to do without damaging them), and I couldn't find a source for replacements. I still have a couple of the woofers and may see what happens if I use foam suspensions on them.
I believe the styrofoam/aluminum foil sandwich gives a light and very strong cone, but in front of the voice coil there is a heavy disc of bitumenous padding, I assume to lower the resonant frequency. I suspect that it is part of why the woofers sag so very dramatically - almost off the suspension completely at at the top.

I am not sure that foam surrounds would work. Just now I have 3 pairs (original sandwich, 600 and 2060).
1/ The first pair is a two way with the original 13 inch bass (Black surround plus white centre)
2/ Three way with sandwich mid plus 12 inch sandwich bass with black cloth surround.
This pair has sagged, so for now I have fitted Wharfdale bass units to get them going.
I think in future I may be able to salvage the bass units by moving the magnets.
3/ This is the newest pair and has the 12 inch bass with orange surround
and black centre (model 2060).
There is no problem with its bass unit, although I have had to replace the tweeters and
am shortly to upgrade the capacitors and wiring.
