Leaky Cap?

Hi guys I am calling on this forums expertise yet again, I had put this amp up for sale to help get my vintage set up back together again but when I removed the cover to give it a blowing out I noticed what appears to be a leaky cap so I ended the sale. I could not in good conscience sell the amp that way, after all someone worked hard to buy something like this and it just wouldn't be right. Please take a look at the picture and chime in, its a Parasound HCA-1500A its a very nice sounding amp. Thanks, Bob.

Really, that would be great. Is there any way to know for sure I cant sell it to someone not knowing. Thank you for your input it is very much appreciated. Bob.

Mate relax, its glue. A leaky cap giveaway can include a big brown stain and corroded components nearby that have been affected by the leak. You usually also get a fairly acidic and unpleasant smell as well.

Glue, no problem. You could always replace it (looks like 1000uf) for less than a buck. You are a stand up seller.

I took a feeler gauge on its side across the top of the cap, its as flat as flat can be. Thank you for the compliment but I am not a seller, I need to sell this to get back into a vintage set up which is my preference. I don't buy to sell is what I am trying to say, I made a mistake going new/modern. I think about the guy busting his hump for 500.00 a week helping take care of his family, he saves to buy something like this and its a dud, I could not do that nor would I want it done to me. Thanks again for the kind words. Bob.

Hey guys there is a 3 lead piece next to that cap marked cs 202 that has that brown stuff on 2 of its legs should that be replaced also? Thanks, Bob.

Hi guys almost a 4 hr round trip to see a tech but the good news is Robert says it is indeed some type of glue and it is good to go :jump: Thanks for all the input I really do appreciate it. Bob.

Hey jessbob that type of cap has the vent on the top, where the lines on the top meet are the seams of the vent. If that cap would vent it would bulge upward and leak from that point. The other type has a rubber gasket or such from the bottom where the leads come out and is plugged from the bottom. That type would leak from the bottom of a bad cap. Just want to help you identify any possible future bad caps. Hope this helps.
