LED conversion question

I just converted the FM and AM indicators and the Stereo light to LED on a couple Sony 6060's. FM and AM indicators look and work great. I'm running them at 1mA.

When the receiver is not tuning in stereo I read 13V on the positive supply and about 8V on ground which leaves me about 5V potential. When it tunes in stereo the positive supply drops to about 12V and the 8V on ground drops to 0V. The LED lights up either way, naturally dimmer when stereo is not tuned.

I read here somewhere that Sony left 5V across the bulb when not on to increase the life of the bulb.

My question is how can I drop the voltage/current to the LED when I am not tuning stereo so the LED goes off when not in stereo and on when in stereo?

i am thinking a diode in series should drop the voltage ..you may want to start with one and see how it looks ..you may need 2 though .

I too was thinking just stick another 3.4V white LED in the circuit and adjust the resistor to maintain the 1 mA current? The second LED would be under the case.

Perhaps a 5.1v Zener diode in series with the LED would do the trick? The LED would not light with a 5v differential but would when the 5v was exceded.
