Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman dies at age 70
Dec. 21, 2012, 7:52 PM EST

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Authorities say Lee Dorman, the bassist of psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly, has died at age 70.

Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Gail Krause says Dorman was found dead in a vehicle Friday morning. A coroner's investigation is under way, but foul play is not suspected.

Dorman was also a founding member of the rock group Captain Beyond.

Iron Butterfly rose to prominence in the late 1960s. According to the band's website, its second album, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," sold more than 30 million copies. Portions of the song have been featured in numerous films and TV shows.

Douglas Lee Dorman was born in September 1942 and had been living in Laguna Nigel, a coastal city in Southern California, when he died.

That's two of them who died this year and were in both those bands!

Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (July 7, 1948 – January 2, 2012) was an American rock guitarist who played with Iron Butterfly and Captain Beyond. At one time Reinhardt was known by the nicknames "El Rhino" and "Ryno".

Reinhardt and Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman formed Captain Beyond in 1971, recruiting former Johnny Winter/Rick Derringer drummer Bobby Caldwell, along with former Deep Purple vocalist Rod Evans. Captain Beyond released its debut album, Captain Beyond, on Capricorn Records a year later. The band recorded a live album in 1973, Far Beyond A Distant Sun - Live Arlington, Texas, which was not released until 2002. That same year, Marty Rodriguez replaced Caldwell on drums, and keyboardist Reese Wynans, former member of the Blues Messengers and the Second Coming, joined. This new line-up recorded and released Sufficiently Breathless. However, the band soon split up.

G'day all, that's very sad news. I loved his 'heavy' bass work on 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. Another sad loss from the world of Rock. :tears: Regards, Felix aka catman.

johnr66 you just illustrated something. The only song people think of when the LP In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is discussed is the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, and there are other tracks on the LP that musically are just as good if not better. In today's iTunes world people would only purchase IAGDV and forget about the other tracks that are there, and miss out on some really good music.

I had to add this my spell check came up with this In-A-Gaddafi-Da-Vida as a spelling correction for In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida :lmao:

I also think that side one of IAGDV was better than the side two title track. The Ball album by Iron Butterfly was also very good. I just listened to both of these records last week.

IB's "Metamorphosis" album gets annual rotation over here. May need to listen to it again tonight. :tears: RIP, Lee.

I was waiting for somebody to mention Metamorphosis hardly anyone has heard of it. And it is one of my favorites. I am listening to it right now. It sure was a better quality recording then IAGDV. I had the original CD issue of IAGDV, for just a few hours it was terrible and I took it back for a refund. This is when the labels where dusting off their masters and just transferring them to CD, knowing they could put cow farts on a CD and it would sell.

Got my copy of Metamorphosis sitting out by the TT now. I'm gonna spin it tonight. Both ee and Rhino are on that album.

Lee took me for a ride in his yellow Lamborghini many moons ago. I marveled at how we were flying around curves in Laurel Canyon practically horizontal in that bad ass vehicle.
A very nice guy.
RIP, Lee.

Sad... Nice to read some of the memories. I loved Captain Beyond and their Dawn Explosion albums and then with Iron Butterfly, IAGDV, Ball and Metamorhposis. Thank you for the music and RIP.
