Left front channel dead on QRX-5500

As you may have guessed from the subject line, I am the proud owner of a sansui QRX-5500, whose front left channel is dead. I've checked everything, its not the speaker, the wire, balanced knob turned the wrong way, or anything like that. The channel is dead on both speakers A and B, and even when you plug in headphones to the front channel. I cannot afford the quadbob refurbish treatment now (or any time soon) and am wondering if opening it up and cleaning it a bit, or maybe replacing a transistor or two would solve the problem. I have a little electronics knowledge and soldering experience but its been a while and I'm not sure where to even start if I open this thing up. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Check the Mimi fuses under the bottom sheet metal cover you will need to remove the wood case I believe there is 8 of them front and rear for jA and B speaker systems. I believe it’s a 3.5 amp mini fuses
Some one a couple of months ago had the same issue turned out it was just the fuse. Ken good luck
 
Do you get both channels in mono mode? If so, the fault is in the pre-amp in the signal path before the mono switch. Try "exercising" all the controls.

So i opened it up and there were in fact two blown fuses. I replaced them and since I had to buy 10 of them I went ahead and replaced them all. When I started it up the front left channel was fixed, but now the rear left channel is gone and the rear right channel sounds very quiet and distorted/scratchy. I opened it back up and checked the fuses, none had blown. I put the old fuses back in just to check same outcome. Any idea what could have happened?
 
You might try to dexot (clean) the push button switches for the tape monitors the right and left channels can sound as you have described I have had to do them a couple of times over the years and are due again on my QRX 5500 it’s been 10 years since QRX restore re capped and cleaned those switches I have had good luck with using corrosion X from my local grainier it’s less expensive and last longer it’s what they use at QRX restore. I'm thinking on buying one of these babies. I own a QRX-3500 right now. I need more speakers that's why I'm looking at the Qrx-5500. Plus it's a beautiful receiver. I'm hoping he gets his working properly.
 
The QRX 5500 is a very well designed and built unit I had put a lot of hours on since new in 74 and the only weak link is those tape monitor switches getting oxidized and dirty over time, which can cause right of left channels to drop out or seem weak distorted scratchy. ctquadguy keep in mind these units are approaching 50 years and will need a full recap to keep them going for decades to come.
the level control knob is a great feature which you don’t see often.
 
Honestly right now I am looking at a QRX-5500 or a QRX-6001. Both have been serviced the 5500 is more expensive but the 6001 I think has a better decoder on it. If I could afford one I'de probably by a QRX-7001 or later but they are just to much money for me on a fixed income. I'm trying to buy the last receiver I will need for thee foreseeable future. I have also been using a Fisher 404 quad. So it's either buying a better Sansui which has more options or a better Quad Fisher. I'm looking at the 504 Fisher also. One way or the other I'm buying something in March and I could use all the input I could get..
 
Ok So i see you are steering me away from as you call it the trailing technology Fisher lol. However are you trying to tell me that the Qrx-5500 is better then the QRX-6001? I don't really care about the money aspect of things I just want the better receiver. But I must admit the 5500 is a beautiful receiver with all those meters. We'll see.
 
Well I did it....I bought a Sansui QRX-5500 that has been totally refurbished. Now I am done buying receivers for a long time.....I hope lol.
 
well I have a Sansui SD-7000 reel to reel a QRX-3500, A set of SP-7500x's and a pair of Sansui ss-20 headphones. And I'm talking with a guy right now about buying some Sansui SP-5500x speakers or some Sp-2500 not sure on the prices lol. It's a sickness........
 
well the Qrx-5500 arrived tonight at 6:45 pm. I didn't waste any time in hooking the ole girl up. And WOW!! That receiver makes my speakers sound amazing. I couldn't believe the bass that it had without even trying to reach for it. Even the reel to reel sounds good on it. I think I have FINALLY found the receiver I can be happy with. This receiver really has a nice rich sound. I am so glad I spent the money.
 
Welcome to the wonderful Sansui sound I have had my QRX 5500 since new purchased in subic bay through the navy exchange in 1974 by looking through there catalog on the mess deck with a yomen 2nd class on his advice because it had great sound and low power consumption I didn’t even get to hear the set until we arrived state side,and it still sounds great and had it recapped 10 years ago after 47 years it is one of my favorites glad you spent the extra money you will not be disappointed. Ken
