Lenco L62 VS Pro-Ject RPM4

Hi All,

I have owned the Lenco L62 for just about a year now (and this is my first turntable). Recently I've gotten a lot of popping sounds while playing records. If I play around with the wires behind the turntable it may quite them down. Conversely I blew fuses, twice already (!!!) in my pre-amp's power supply unit. The hifi man I bought this stuff off says that he can swap the Lenco, with a surcharge, to a Pro-Ject RPM4 (http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-4425-discontinued-project-rpm4-turntable.aspx).
Please note all, I am not an expert in the field and am just starting out as a wannabe audiophile.

I have several concerns.
  1. Is this really an upgrade?
  2. Does it fit my pre-amp and speakers (description below)?
  3. Does it have a dust cover? (is one needed really?)

The possibilities of the Lenco being upgraded are far better than the Project table. The Lenco is an idler drive table if I am correct, so some restoration probably needs to happen. Replacing the interconnects should not be real difficult. Now, the Project could be plug and play as it's newer, but it's really up to you.
 
No, the L62 is a belt drive - nothing like the heavy platter Lenco idlers like the L75 that I have. As to the Pro-Ject RPM4 being an improvement over the Lenco L62 - dunno I suspect they would be comparable if the Lenco was working properly. I would suggest you get the Lenco checked and see what's up with that. Sounds more like a wiring - interconnect issue with the Lenco. The preamp issue may or may not be related to the table but I kind of doubt it. The cartridge sends a very tiny signal to the preamp I don't see how that would impact the preamp power supply.

Don't have any experience with either, but I'd say the RMP4 has a far better arm.
The RPM4 has a dust cover (loose). An Ortofon 520 stylus would be a good idea.

YMMV but the RPM4 matches your amplifier and speakers as a system far more IMO.
An OM10, though decent is not really up to the job. An OM20 is. An OM30 is not much
better than an OM20 out of the box, but it will last a lot longer, so an investment.

@sreten, my milage is, as I have already said, very low. Please explain why you think the RPM4 better suits my gear? It would be very informative for me.
 
If this Lenco were idler, I'd say keep the Lenco. (especially so if heavy platter) It still may well be good. More a tie, the Pro-ject tonearm is superior.
