Less common Soundesign separate components. Anyone familiar with them?

Came across these in a post recently. Don't look like the typical Soundesign trashy rack system. (Though the rack itself is apparently trash.)



Some image searching brings up Soundesign Model 5157 for the receiver. The faceplate mentions IC/FET/PLL, as features. Model 0842 for the tape deck (though in silver finish instead). Model 0460 for the 8 track (again, in silver instead). Didn't see either in black finish while searching, so the model #s might not be right for them.

Sure, can't tell anything from just the faces, but I would be curious to know more about them if anyone has the 411.

This is purely from memory, and it was a long time ago...

The Soundesign components were, for Soundesign, their high end. But they were low end components compared with the commonly loved brands.

Of note, the tape deck lacks Dolby NR and has 1/8" rather than 1/4" mike jacks (back then, the latter were almost always a sign of a lower quality deck).

Typically manufacturers use a suffix for a different trim color, such as B or S, and it probably would not have appeared on the front panel.

I consider my Rotel RB-990BX/NAD 1700/Marantz CD6004/Infinity RS II main set up to be mid fi.
I am terribly disappointed to find out it is no better than a SoundDesign stack.
I really wish I hadn't read your post.

I used to be kinda proud of my stack of utter crap mid-fi gear!

That Soundesign unit looks almost identical to a Panasonic(not Technics) receiver that we had when I was in high school, 40+ years ago. It acceptably drove its pair of Thruster speakers to reasonable volumes for quite some time.

Your Rotel / Marantz / Infinity RSII setup is a lot higher up the food chain than my Pioneer SC-1222K receiver and PDF-908 cd changer and Infinity Qb's... I wouldn't let twiii's comment bug you. Calling anything by Soundesign "mid fi" is a stretch.

Evidently I've under estimated my system or twiii has over estimated the SoundDesign system.

A lot of folks like the Qb's, hope you do too.
