Okay so there was a post about someone who bought a Pioneer PLX-1000..nice table. Happen to come across this from Technics looking at that and similar models

Amazon.com: Technics Turntable, Premium Class HiFi Record Player with Coreless Direct, Stable Playback, Audiophile-Grade Cartridge and Auto-Lift Tonearm, Dustcover Included – SL-100C, Black (SL-100C-K) : Electronics

Tougting itself as high end but the best part ? Audiophile Grade cartridge. So $1000 turntable and they put a $39 cartridge on it ? Serious ? Thats audiophile grade ? LOL

You can get a top line Fluance for a bit over $500 and they put a $239 cart on it....Oh how the mighty technics has fallen :-) The Pioneer doesnt come with a cartidge but considering its $300 less than the technics , there is plenty of room for a decent one - Myself I would mount an AT540Ml

Yes that cartridge could definitely be better - $30 cart on a >$1000 TT.

This tidbit told the whole story.

I wouldn’t judge it by the description on the Amazon listing. Those can be nerfed by third party sellers. I am in the midst of trying to clean up some for my company at the moment.

Lots of great turntables don’t even come with carts so I don’t get your point. Also, a rather famous Linn came with a starter cart as the thought was table before cart. Your post comes off as ignorant and misleading. What’s there to beware of?

The only ignorance here is your response post which is not the AK way. If you dont get the point then maybe you would put an inferior budget cart on an expensive table but most would not. Maybe you should read also that its sold by amazon (as the 3rd party) from technics. And yes, many tables dont come with a Cart which would have been much better in this case than supplying ....Are you connected with Technics because if so, tell your marketing this was a swing and a miss. Look at all the $1000 dollar tables ...how many come with a commensurate cart or no cart ? I have not seen ANY OTHER that supply the cheapest on the market

The SL-100C is Technics current entry level turntable and when it was released it sold for $ 1,000 with the AT VM95-C cartridge.

I had a 100C for a short while last year and gave the VM-95C a listen. I thought the cartridge was not bad, but it's not great. Herb Reichert liked it better than I did:

Music-pleasure–wise, Audio-Technica's VM95C was the most satisfying cartridge in this survey.

Entry level table (in the Technics lineup), entry level cartridge, keep the price down - I can see Technics' logic.

I gave the SL-100C to my son, but did try a variety of cartridges on it before I passed it along. You're not wrong in saying the turntable can support a much higher quality of cartridge, and as the cartridge improved, so did the sound.

If i had a grand to spend on a tt id buy one today. The cart in question is more than good in my experience. Used it on my AT140XP and ATLPW50PB and while not sparkling, its great for noisier records. Just get another stylus or another headshell and swapping carts is a breeze. What’s not to like?

I finally had a chance to open it. It is the Technics Store so direct from Technics.

Not understanding the outrage for a AT VM95 being provided :dunno:

I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of Amazon. I can say in my experience, as a brand on Amazon with fulfillment through their warehouse, one can still have their ASINs nerfed by other resellers (authorized or unauthorized) with bad descriptions, images, etc.

I am living this at work right now and my team is helping to clean it up. I would imagine, Technics as a large company, has the resources to dedicate a team soley to Amazon ecom but who knows? The way that listing reads, it's like they contracted the management to another firm as the title is way too long and stuffed with key words; Amazon actually recommends concise descriptions.

All I'm saying is brands don't always have 100% control of what shows up on a listing and you have to constantly work to make sure it's to your standards. If that description was on the Technics website then I could see the questioning but even then, there's no buyer beware scenario here IMHO.

The SL 100C is equipped from Technics with the AT-Vm95C, not from another seller. Of course, one should at once swap the stylus against one of the better offerings for the AT-VM95. Then it is an adequate pickup. Audiophile? What exactly is that?
