Let's Not Rumble!

I recently assembled a box of parts and came up with a Sansui FR 1080 turntable. It had an ATC cartridge and I added the recommended new stylus and a new belt. Everything works-auto return, lift, on/off stop lever, etc. No hum, but it rumbles. I've tried everything I can think of including swapping cartridges, looking under the hood for loose wiring, and using it with another system. But I get the same low frequency rumble. Of course turning off the bass eliminates it. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

The rumble is caused by the low bass frequencies from your speakers being transfered to your TT. You've proved it by turning the bass down. There are many options to try to rid this and improve performance. Many are covered in the Turntable Forum. Some quick ones for you:
1. Make sure your VTF is set properly to the cart's spec and add .25 grams.
2. If you have a low freq/bass filter on your receiver or preamp engage it and see if this cures your rumble.
3. Move the TT away from the speakers, preferrably to a heavy piece of furniture that won't transfer vibration. Some have had great results by mounting a heavy shelf to the wall studs for the TT.
4. Level your TT
5. Check your suspension's rubber mounts and springs. It appears yours has a floating suspension via springs. Your plinth should not come in contact with the base as this will transfer vibration to the tonearm and cart. I've attached a pic of yours.

One or all should do the trick for you.

TT rumble.

I too had same problem. I tried all sorts of isolaters for TT. I was playing with grandaughter blowing up balloons. I thought, Hmmm? If I blow up four balloons about 2" dia. and put under TT. What have I got to lose. Well it made a 60-70% improvement to my rumble. What a difference in sound, it cleared up the muddiness of sound and also made it crisper. Try it, improve on it. There are alot of expensive solutions you can buy.
