Lets see some Mono Hi-Fi Stuff.

I'll start off. If there is already a thread on the subject just point me in the right direction and i'll delete this one.

I say Hi-Fi stuff because obviously there is lots of radio related gear out there. I'm interested in seeing pics of the era when component stuff started being built for home use.

Here is my mid to late 40s Jensen Bass Reflex cabinet with a Jensen JAP-60 15" coax speaker installed. It is as I found it and needs a few hours of touchup work to look its best. I have nothing built to drive its 600 ohm impedance. In the pic its hooked up to a 150 Watt SS amp. It does put out enough voltage to get decent volume out of the speaker. Sounds a lot better than I expected to and somehow playing recordings originally intended to be mono do seem to be more involving to listen to playing thru it. (I know its all in my head).

I'm now on the hunt for an amp from the same era.

So what do you have? Lets see it?

One pic with flash one without. The lighting in this room is terrible for pictures.

A pair of MONO's make stereo. So let's see some MONO PAIRS here!!!

But being serious, I wouldn't consider stereo to be the ONLY hi-fi. In small spaces (and as with some small consoles) stereo is sometimes almost useless as speakers can't be seperated enough to impressively distinguish the channels and the sounds meld together.

Additionally, stereo is just a "way" to enjoy music. Like sitting in front of an orchestra pit, you'll have some instruments on the left, others on the right, others dead center. Having all of these sounds coming from a singular source doesn't really deminish quality or in some senses the fidelity (faithfulness) of the source, it's just a variation in expression.

but are those tube ham-radios hifi?

An Ex of mine always had one speaker of her Stereo in the Kitchen, the other in the living room, but she insisted to keep the button set on Stereo on her Receiver... I couldn't explain that this made no sense

I got an idea. If you want to debate what the definition of High Fidelity is why don't you start a thread on the subject instead of crapping in this one?

As in, reproducing an operator's voice?

If we're going there, then why not consider guitar amps hi-fi? When I amplify my acoustic guitar, I feel my amp it is doing a very faithful (hi-fi) job of reproducing my acoustic sound in a loud and electronic fashion. Certainly, my guitar amp isn't stereo.

targeteye...do you have any pics of the rear or driver?

600 ohm, wow, isnt there some kind of autoformer like Speltz
that you can use to bring it down?

WhiteSE,

Here are the pics. I suspect the actual impedance of the voice coils in this speaker are much lower and most likely 16 ohm. Someone has told me elsewhere that 500-600 ohms would have been the standard at the time for external speakers to a system because the 70Volt line system had yet been developed.

Its very hard to trace out the circuit with the speaker installed I suspect a different crossover could be used, bypass the existing setup attached to the frame and use it as a 16 ohm setup.

Very nice!!!

I have a similar, smaller Jensen cabinet that houses a 12" driver. Unfortunately the original 12" is long gone, and a later Jensen 12" is in it's place.

FWIW, I always considered high quality monophonic systems to be the definition of Hi-Fi. (High Fidelity) Stereo is just that x 2.

had a silvertone "hifi" mono console am/fm phono 3 speakers that was given to me by an aunt when I was about 13-14 IIRC it had a single 6V6 output

"RJ" speaker cabinet on left, Homebuilt speaker cabinet in the middle (with Stephens 206ax inside) , and Klipschorn on right. (Sorry for the terrible picture.)

7-24-2018 EDIT: That middle cabinet is not a home built, it's a Jensen BL-151.
