P38 Lightning's, that is:thmbsp:. This weekend the Planes of Fame will be holding their airshow at Chino airport in SoCal. I might spring for grandstand seats this time.:smoke: There'll be the full complement of WW2 planes, up to five flying P38s! I'm sure there'll be a flock of P51s if this show is anything like previous years. F86 Sabrejet and a Mig15 and many more.

Is that the same boomerang shaped plane they used in the first Indiana Jones movie? The fight on the plane and that big German guy gets chopped up in the propellers? I just remember seeing it and didn't think they even had a plane like that back then (movie setting, not filming of the movie).

No, as I understand it, the Indy plane is sort of a one off design from the Northup and German war plane files and has a passing resemblance to the flying wing design of Horten Ho 229, at first a prop wing but finally a true two engine jet wing, flying in late 1944 and into 1945 before the end of the war. The Indy plane was a twin prop engine pusher plane with raised wings and droop winglets not unlike a Klingon Warbird. Looked neat though. The prop was left in the Tunisian desert after filming was completed, eventually torn apart by prop collectors, and then finally bulldozed into the sands.

Well that explains why I've never come across that Northrup design (being the end of the war). I've seen a bunch of WWII model kits (have some German Stukas I still haven't gotten around to building), but never one of those. I'll have to keep my eye out for one if they make model kits of it.
